Chavez again seeks way past term limit

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced Sunday he will again seek to change his office's two-term limit so he can seek re-election. Addressing a rally of his supporters, Chavez -- whose second six-year term expires in 2012 -- said he'd like to run again and perhaps even still be in power in 2021. ... Chavez lost a similar bid last year, when Venezuelans shot down a referendum that would have allowed him to run for a third term in 2012. That referendum proposed 69 amendments to the 1999 constitution, including one that would have abolished term limits. www.cnn.com... i'm not too familiar with how Chávez has handled his last 2 terms in office, but how would Americans react if Bush Jr. amended our Constitution to allow for more than 2 presidential terms in Office?? i wonder if they'll let Chávez stay in this time around? is there anyone here on ATS who's from Venezuela that's willing to share their opinion on this? don't forget that the Bank of the South is in Venezuela, who's now a member of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) - Mr. Chávez personally helped launch the Bank... Venezuela and others have suggested that Banco del Sur become the IMF of South America. Such an institution would presumably play a significant role in regional monetary policy and provide some form of balance of payments finance. www.bicusa.org... oh brother.. I met a Venezuelan guy in Panama City just recently. He didn't hesitate to refer to Chavez as "crazy". Their country is pretty divided on Chavez I think. I don't think they'll let him extend it, and I think he'll try and retire or pull a putin and make himself a new position with power, but I don't think he'd try and forcefully take over the country and create a dictatorship, unless he really loses it. A good video to watch is called "the revolution will not be televised" Gives some insight into the Chavez presidency that you might not find elsewhere.

How to Beat Mr. Chávez FOR YEARS, opponents of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez embraced extreme and counterproductive tactics, ranging from election boycotts to a national strike and an attempted military coup. Yet in the past year -- as *Mr. Chávez has accelerated his drive to install a Cuban-style socialist* regime** -- the opposition has finally found a winning answer: democracy. Last December voters rejected a new constitution that would have greatly increased presidential powers and allowed Mr. Chávez unlimited presidential terms. On Sunday Venezuelans turned out in record numbers for local elections -- and chose opposition candidates for five of the six most important elected posts in the country after the presidency. Until this week, Mr. Chávez's allies controlled all but two of the country's 23 state governorships, as well as the city halls of the largest cities. Now opposition leaders will govern five states, including the three largest, as well as greater Caracas and Maracaibo, the two biggest cities. Government candidates won in 17 states, including many sparsely populated rural regions. But almost half of Venezuela's population will now look to an elected leader who opposes Mr. Chávez's self-styled "Bolivarian revolution." ... Mr. Chávez deserves some credit for not acting on his threats and for recognizing the opposition victories. The caudillo nevertheless shows no sign that he is listening to the country. "The people are telling me: Chávez continue down the same road," he declared after the results were announced. That road has recently included the nationalization of major industries, huge arms purchases from Russia and heavy subsidies to leftist allies elsewhere in Latin America. You wrongly keep trying to insert Bush into your thread. He is not a dictator. Has never tried to become one. He has nothing to do with what Chavez is trying to do in Venezuala. So, it is unknowable how Chavez could "eerily remind you of Bush". Most likely your use of Bush in this thread is nothing more than a lame (trolling?) attempt to stir up some controversy and thus gain you more points. Chavez's actions should come as no surprise to anyone. He obviously thinks Castro's Cuba is the ideal state and would love to install the same government in Venezuala. Chavez's problem is that Castro has no "term limits", while Chavez does.

I think you're both wrong. Bush, will never be a dictator, never had a chance.... Chavez, will likely never be dictator.....still possible, but i honestly think he's against the idea. I think he wants democracy, I just think he doesn't want a corrupt one, with rigged elections etc etc....and there are people who would rig them against him. Would he rig elections in his own favor? he may. Not because he desires a dictatorship however, because he doesn't want a extreme right wing party in power. He's less of a dictator and more of a sore loser. You know, he allows TV in venezuela to say what they will about him, and yes, they do seem to lie to the public(as does north american media and probably all other MSM worldwide). Don't ever forget, Chavez has many supporters within his own country, I'm not sayin he's the most squeaky clean leader in the world, but he's certainly not as bad as he's painted here in the states.

I lived in Venezuela when Hugo Chavez was elected... and i friends their to this day... For the 4 years i have been on ATS, i consider myself the self-proclaimed Hugo Chavez expert... This Toad, is so power hungary, he is attempting to put laws in place that will allow him to be president for life... Chavez has also been fixing elections Chavez wants to emulate his mentor... Fiedel Castro... Much of the American Ultra-Left, LOVES Chavez... So this is a situation that we are keeping an eye on...

reply to post by TKainZero lived in Venezuela, you say? you come forth with all these accusations, but where's the proof to back it all up?! no i'm just kidding! i'm not as ignorant as some of the people on this site who say such things... that was even hard for me to type, because it just felt so dirty, and wrong. ...being rude is so negative - bad karma! ...anyway, i, being normal, logical, sensible, and using the brain God gave me, believe what you have to say, even if you don't live there anymore! i'll take your word for it, because it's entirely (in)humanly possible to commit such selfish acts at the expense of human suffering for power and greed - i know the evil men do! thanks for letting us in on that! feel free to add more any time!

not in the mood to search for the years old threads... about my experences there... SO i will retell my first hand account.... But, here is a recent thread, in which Chavez commented on the Socialization/Nationaliation that the US has gone thru the last 3 months Here I moved to Venezuela in 1997, for my fathers job. We went to a private school, 500 kids, K-12... My dad works for a large oil corperation.. yay i know.. .he is just so evil... Anyways... he had converted the aird wasteland of the oil fields, into a natural wildlife area, with hundreds of trees, and animals, surrounding the oil pumps... One day, we were out on the reserve, which was several hours outside town, and my dad recived a phone call from one of his local co-workers in the field... The Venezuela elections were that week.. in a couple days... Former leader in a coup, Hugo Chavez was challenging the incumbant... For those that do not know, in the early '90s, Chavez and part of the Venezuela military, attempted to overthrow the government of Venezeula, leading an assualt on the capitol building in Caracas... His Coup failed... and he was put in jail for several years... This is where Chavez developed his strong Anti-American ideals... He beleives that the CIA helped the Venezuelan government, and thats why he failed in his military coup... Now fast foreward to the field... My dad recieves a phone call, and he goes into a instant panic... he is screeming at us 4 kids... He throws us in his car, and is driving full speed away... im only 12 years old... i cannot get a word out of my dad... Then, we reach the front of the Oil Field, i see what was happening... Doezens of soilders... Tanks... Armoured vehicals... The word on the street is that if Chavez were to lose, that he would attempt a coup again... Launching attacks in several cites... Tanks were rolling towards the city... We rushed home, and bought up enough supplies for weeks... The next day, you could look out the windows, and see army men all over the city... We lived on the 23rd floor... i could see most of the city of 2 million people, and with my binoculars, i had more to watch then i could even realise... Of course Chavez won.. and that singled the end of international buisness in the area... Chavez Nationalized all the Oil Feilds... The seizure meant that we were moving back to the states... The string of events after the election of Chavez happen fast... Radid inflation Shortage of basic goods and the supprestion of ALL opposing views... The currency was 500 boliviers to a US dollar... within 18 months, the currency went to near 2500 to a dollar, and then Chavez Frooze the price... so no more inflation... The Boliver has been frozen at near 2500 to a dollar for over 7 years now... maybe longer... Simple good like milk, and bread became scare in the cities... Long lines formed, and are still there Government Rationing is in full effect All opposing Views have been shut down.. TV stations Radio stations Newspapers Student Groups Anyone who goes against Chavez finds themselves... disapeared... Into the Venezuela political prisons... Chavez also fixes elcetions... Fixing results to make him look like he wins big, or just narrowly loses... Last election time, Chavez made his power grab, and the Venezuelan people denied him... a HUGE majority... The results were not released for days... and when they were 51-49... Whenever Chavez is defeated, that is the margin... When he wins, its huge... Much of the Radical American Far Left is in love with this man... I do not know why... I think its the media... You must know... This is a man that fashions himself after Castro He is always dressed in military garb Has a personal elite guard and it spending on his military like a drunken sailor... (or like George Bush) For YEARS, i have been trying to put forth the ideas that are out there... to put forth what is not being reported there...
