Washington has made "very clear" to Israel that it opposes any attempt to kill or expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat after the Israelis made threats against him.

"US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said Washington had made its position "very clear" to Israel.

The statement came after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Mr Arafat was among those who might be targeted for assassination.

He said anyone who killed a Jew or harmed an Israeli was a "marked man".

Last October Israel's security cabinet decided in principle to "remove" Mr Arafat."

I have never bothered to research Yasser Arafat, but the man must be very well connected to still be alive after all that has gone on. Do you think he will feature prominently in future events in that region? Or will he fade into obscurity.

Whose idea was that farcical "Prime Minister" position they developed in Palestine anyway?...

Israel, with the upcoming celebrations of Passover, is sending a very specific subtle "message" and "warning" to Arafat.....here is why:
A Fatah Assassination Plot: Israeli Diplomats

It was revealed in a military court today that Fatah was on the verge of carrying out a plan to assassinate Israeli diplomats in several foreign countries. The revelation comes on the heels of a report yesterday that Hamas terrorists planned to assassinate Knesset Member David Levy. In both cases, the arrest of the conspirators prevented the attacks.

In a plea bargain, the IDF Salim Military Court sentenced a Fatah Al-Aqsa Brigade terrorist to 18 years in prison for planning to assassinate Israel's ambassadors to Germany and China. The terrorist also admitted planning to poison water supplies and to blow up gas installations and a hotel in Israel.
