Shadow health secatary forced to retract recession statements

news.bbc.co.uk

Shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley has apologised for remarks he made saying a recession could be "good for us" in many ways.

He said: "Interestingly on many counts, recession can be good for us. People tend to smoke less, drink less alcohol, eat less rich food and spend time at home with their families."

Mr Lansley later removed the comments and said: "I am very sorry for any offence this has caused and I totally withdraw my comments."

I found this a few minutes ago, and thought it was quite interesting. Apparently the opposition jumped all over it to gain one up on the Tories. His comments seem absolutely true to me, though. Every cloud and all that; though of course Labour used his comments as a gleaming example of how the conservatives clearly would not look after the public like Labour are at the moment
