FDA finds traces of melamine in US infant formula

news.yahoo.com

Traces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling U.S. infant formula, but federal regulators insist the products are safe.

The Food and Drug Administration said last month it was unable to identify any melamine exposure level as safe for infants, but a top official said it would be a "dangerous overreaction" for parents to stop feeding infant formula to babies who depend on it.
The levels that we are detecting are extremely low," said Dr. Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. "They should not be changing the diet. If they've been feeding a particular product, they should continue to feed that product. That's in the best interest of the baby."

Melamine is the chemical found in Chinese infant formula — in far larger concentrations — that has been blamed for killing at least three babies and making at least 50,000 others ill.
Three tests of Nestle's Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron detected an average of 0.247 parts per million of cyanuric acid, a melamine byproduct.

The FDA says it is ok?

Unbelievable!

Infants drinking even a minute bit of poison can affect them - it might be ok for those trace amounts in an adult. But is the FDA being honest saying it is ok for infants, with the small trace amount? and not using data from if adults had that amount?

If I had a baby - I would be up in arms with the fact the FDA is saying it is ok to give poison to it!

I can not believe they will not take the formula off the shelves, besides will the MSM even carry this story? If they did it would cause a mass up roar in the states!

We should not accept ANY amount of poison in our baby's formula - no matter how small of an amount!

This is the kind of story that just irritates me. Last month no amount of melamine was acceptable, but now it is? Feeding babies plastic is preferable to not feeding them at all? Now there is a false dichotomy.

God forbid we upset China by calling BS on their low-ball, cost-saving tactics. It's no wonder they are kicking our butts in production, it's all just smoke and mirrors. The quality is crap and yet Americans are forced to buy it because we no longer produce anything ourselves. That has got to change.

How many more stories like this do we need to hear before we start un-shuttering some manufacturing facilities here in the USA? There's your 2 million jobs Mr. Obama.

Unbelievable that anyone would accept any kind of toxin in their baby formulas. what the hell ! This is absolutely ridiculous, who in their right mind can justify such a thing with any logic. I don't mind coming off as unreasonable on such a thing, naysayers be damned.
totally agree with kosmicjack and the previous poster as well. What is the value of life, over profit. there is no right and wrong apparently.
