UK Police to be armed with stun guns

About 30,000 police officers across all forces in England and Wales are to be trained to use Taser stun guns.

Currently, only specialist firearms officers carry the weapon, which can temporarily disable a suspect.

But ministers will announce plans later to buy 10,000 more Tasers and extend their use to all frontline officers.

Well, here it is folks.

Let's see if the British Bobby can keep the use of tasers down, or if they fancy emulating their US counterparts with a string of incidents in which these tasers are used excessively, and in many cases, needlessly.

It will also be interesting to see how long before someone is killed by one, and also, how long before one is used against protestors.

Guns next? Maybe?

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told the Sunday Times she was proud police in England and Wales did not regularly carry firearms and that was how she wanted it to stay.

Another "push" to see how much resistance to the REAL changes there might be?

It seems standard practice for them to deny wanting guns on the street, but to be honest, there's rarely an occasion now when I am in London and don't see a cop with a gun.

But let's just see what happens if/when the cops start getting taze-happy.

Those are specially-trained firearms officers. They are not your average bobby. The amount of training they have to have to keep their guns on duty is staggering. Tasers are not going to be a 'gateway' weapon - the reasons behind not arming every cop are still sound, and not going anywhere.

Well, the cops may not have guns, but I bet you the bad guys do.

Once they start seeing rounds coming their way, they will realize that firing back with tasers won't get the job done. I reckon the tasers will be used to control people at those soccer matches.

I think its a good idea, With the proper training It can act as a very good example of less than lethal technology and maybe preserve more lives. Since I live in the U S does anybody know why UK police officers dont carry sidearms in accordance with their job responsibilities?

People seem to think that the world is separated by countries, yet in all truth it is already a one world totalitarian regime.

Watch out for the elderly and the pregnant, when first they opt to desensitize it is always the most vulnerable used.

What is going to happen which is going to cause universal chaos and discord by the masses, the common people?

We know one thing for sure , we still have a bit of time.

A thread should be started which catalogs all the events which lead to something going down. Not the rumors and such, just the real eye openers like this one.

Simple, my friend. Everybody knows that if you so much as get caught carrying a knife you will be prosecuted for carrying an offensive weapon. Consequently the only nutters carrying guns are big-time drug dealers and armed robbers in large cities (and, arguably, those planning acts of terror, one in a million). They are dealt with swiftly and efficiently by armed response units - handfuls of highly-trained specialist police officers who can be called upon at a moment's notice.

UK police as a whole have never needed to carry arms as they discharge their responsibilities in a society that is neither overrun with violence nor addicted to guns. Citizens of the UK therefore often react with horror when the idea of an armed police force is mooted. (You should hear the anger when the suggestion is touted in live TV/radio discussions!)

Long may it remain so.

I fear you may be right. This may well be an issue of desensitization.

It should therefore be fought against tooth and nail.

im from the uk and criminals in this country know that at the moment, police have no power- which in my opinion is true
however, with the introduction of tasers, police will not need to discharge, just deploy the taser, and that will be enough to incapacitate all but the most stupid/drugged-up/both criminals, as they will never have seen uk police so menacing
