The risk of a United Kingdom default has increased over the last few days, we are currently second to Italy; insurance policy against a British default is increasing. I heard this piece of information on the BBC.

We have to remember, Labour - since 1997 - have been incorrect on borrowing figures and economic growth targets. If Darling has miscalculated then Britain faces a much worse economic crisis and yes, IMF bailout will be required.

Plus, this is arguably the most socialist and left wing budget since 1945 - when Clement Attlee rebuilt the economy after the Second World War. VAT reduction will not work, prices are already falling and being cut by retailers. Attlee, unlike Brown, understood socialist economic policy could only go so far and was potentially too expansive.

Maybe the chancellor should be chasing down some of the big corporate tax dodgers too to bolster income?
For instance (a real bugbear of mine), the big private rail operators, who not only still receive £Millions in government subsidy but are allowed Tax deferments too. Basically it means they get to pay a ridiculously small percentage of tax and roll the remainder owed over to the next year, and the next, and the next, and the next etc......... Now if the government can do it for them, why can't I?

Stop propping up big business. If those privatised businesses cannot perform without public money then renationalise it and stop having taxpayers who don't use the service prop it up, and pay for all the executive perks too.
Do we REALLY need 2 new aircraft carriers? Probably not, we don't have the Empire now to protect. Do we REALLY need to be spending £20Billion plus on upgrading our (cough) independent nuclear deterrent? Of course not.
In fact, there are many savings that could be made, starting with independent public oversight of government spending for a start.

Why don't they just admit where we are at? We're in for a rough few years whatever, why not just own up? 'We got some things wrong.' Like self certifying mortgages for example, that's a good way to balloon debt. They can even say the Tories allowed them as well........

(edit) Oh, and over reliance on models that did not have track record of predicting in downturns, and while we're at it, no regulation over them.

I actually had a feeling they would raise VAT to about 19% after the 15% period (2011) and I was right, well it's documented as 18.5%

It's so easy to put the rate up once the rate has been knocked down for a few years. I hate these conniving controlling slimy bastards!!!

news.bbc.co.uk...

Why do governments have to be so big..... who gave them the right to control us? A government should always be controlled by the masses. I wanted a petition on the number 10 website but alas it was rejected.

Hi,

I'm sorry to inform you that your petition has been rejected.
Your petition was classed as being in the following categories:
* Party political material

If you wish to edit and resubmit your petition, please follow the following link:

You have four weeks in which to do this, after which your petition will appear in the list of rejected petitions.

Your petition reads: We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to: 'Call an emergency election immediately' I put it to the prime minister that he is in breach of the trust of the people of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown was not elected by the people and the labour party has breached its contract with the people. It promised to build a better Britain and look after the working class but has instead betrayed this promise and thrown it to the wayside classing the contract that they were elected by as null and void. As a result a general election must be held immediately tore-establish a new contract between the government and the people. A government must be put in place to manage the services required by the populous, not to control them, not to lead them into a non defensive war, and not to take the monetary systems of the country and flush them away in order promote an unrequested move towards the euro or other “New economic order” currency. If a predominate number of citizens request a general election then this must be held by the government. I request all those who understand their liberties to sign this petition and to pull this country back onto the main road.
