Why is Obama classified as Black

Why is Obama classified as the first BLACK President of the USA. Obama is not black. He is 50% white and 50% black therefore either called a coloured or mixed race. Why is he not referred to as the Coloured 44th President Elect? Is he ashamed that he has white blood that he has referred himself as a Black?
