Piaggio announces 3 wheeled hybrid gas/electric Scooter
blog.wired.com
Italian scooter-maker Piaggio has unveiled a plug-in hybrid three-wheeler it says will get up to 141 mpg and could be on the road as early as
next year.
The gas-electric version of Piaggio's funky but fun MP3 scooter uses a parallel hybrid system much like that in the Toyota Prius but advances the
technology by adding an electrical cord. Although Toyota, General Motors and several other automakers are developing cars that can be charged from a
wall socket, Piaggio's timeline, if met, would make it the first in the world to mass-produce a plug-in hybrid.
The MP3 Hybrid that Piaggio rolled out at the big international motorcycle expo in Milan, Italy, combines a 125-cc gasoline engine with an electric
motor in an easy-to-ride three-wheeler that reportedly could do zero to 60 in around 5 seconds.
We're still trying to get a hold of the folks at Piaggio, but the electric motor powers the MP3 Hybrid at low speeds and provides the gasoline engine
with additional oomph when you open 'er up -- boosting acceleration by as much as 85 percent, the company says. The scooter can run in full electric
or in one of three hybrid modes designed to maximize performance, maximize fuel economy or recharge the batteries quickly. Piaggio says the MP3 hybrid
goes 60 kilometers on a liter of gas, which works out to about 141 mpg.
Regenerative braking helps charge the batteries, and Piaggio says the MP3 Hybrid will charge in as little as three hours when plugged into a standard
wall socket. (visit the link for the full news article)

I know this story is 12 days old... big deal... its really really cool.
The standard MP3 scooter is striking in and of itself... 3 wheels two in the front, one in the back and the two front wheels lean with the rider. It
has to be seen to believed but its configuration makes it the most stable cycle/scooter ride on the road and all but impossible to lay down.
The 250 cc version goes for around $7100 and gets 60 mpg and goes up to about 80 mph. But this hybrid is only a 125cc, gets around 140 mpg, goes 80
and 0 to 60 in 5 seconds.
And did I say it recharges in 3 hours with a standard house outlet hook up?
It really is amazing. I want one.

Mmmmm... Funky!
Out for a drive today and I saw 3 guys on some weird looking 3 wheelers. Just been looking on the net to try and find them when I saw this thread.
Anyhoos, these look like what I saw, 2 in yellow and 1 in red and they looked really cool.

There is actually a motorcycle out there designed like this that's in yellow... I forget the brand but I've seen it and the front wheels are further
apart but the principle is the same... this hybrid version has yet to be released but the 07 and 08 models weren't yellow so it was probably the
motorcycle... still the idea is cool and a lot more stable than a trike with the two wheels in the back.

This is probably what you saw... its called the spyder roadster and here is a link to an article about it with a 39 photo gallery.

Just looking on their website now.... I waaaaaaaant one...NOW!
Gotta say, seeing it in the flesh it looked very impressive indeed.

What I don't get is why don't they go full electric? I mean, it's an urban runabout, they should be able to make it with a 200km autonomy on a
Li-Ion battery pack. and with that configuration they could actually build the pack into the frame quite high, as it dosen't have the stability
issues of normal scooters.
The vectrix is a much better thing than this, despite the slightly out of date battery tech, and there is also a 3 wheeled model:
