I don't doubt that they banned it, but I doubt the reason. I'm pretty certain they sell cigarettes in France, and I'm pretty certain they're one of the most addictive things sold.

Energy drinks are only bad if you drink, oh, 50 of them a week?

That's a bit ridiculous.

They're not addictive, physically...mentally they could be.

Umm. I thought caffeine WAS addictive. I think banning the stuff is ridiculous but come on, you have to know caffeine is addictive.
