6.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Waters Off Indonesia
www.foxnews.com
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.8-magnitude quake hit 90 miles southwest of Bengkulu, a city on Sumatra island. It was centered about
three miles beneath the ocean floor.
Though strong and shallow, the temblor did not spawn a tsunami, said Fauzi, an official with Indonesia's geological agency. Like many here, he only
uses one name.
Residents in Bengkulu, a city frequently hit by quakes, showed few signs of panic, said Haris Said Hakim, a geological agency official based in the
city. ... (visit the link for the full news article)

I'm no earthquake expert, but isn't a 6.8 earthquake serious? While watching the news, I saw a small 5-second snippet about this, and then they went
back to talking about Obama. It's disturbing to see that the media thinks a man who has been talked about nonstop for over a year now is more
important than an earthquake that could have killed hundreds of lives. I hope the people in Indonesia are okay.

They had a 7.7 about a week ago, I heard about it just after it happened, there was a tsunami alert for awhile as well

That area is really shaking a lot it seems.
Is there a Tsumai warning for this quake? I would be very nervous if I lived in that part of the world. I hope that everyone is and remains safe.

Really? I haven't heard anything on the news about that. Is the media just ignoring it on purpose to fit in more Obama coverage, or are we
desensitized to it now?

My vote goes to Obama coverage. I too thought an earthquake of this magnitude was pretty big news. I thought anything above a 7 was very dangerous.
Guess I was misinformed. Thanks for the update.

I perused the archives and could not find a day in the last year where there were 3 this size in one day. I know nothing of earthquakes, but this is
a little disturbing to me. Maybe I'm worried for nothing. Is it earthquakes over 7 that are considered more significant?

Seems the Pacific Ring of Fire is shaking quite a bit, I would start to watch other areas now, Japan is one that could start.
keep in mind though that it quite normal for them to have quakes from 5 through to 6, Its the depth of the quake that really can matter, the nearer it
is to the surface the more deadly,
Here is a list of counrtys on the Rim,
The countries in the Ring of Fire are: Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras, Indonesia, Japan, Kiribati, Malaysia, Mexico, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nicaragua, North Korea, Palau, Panama, Papua
New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea, Tavalu, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, United States of America, Vanuatu,
Vietnam.
