I call it the 9mm rule of authority. I didn't find a reason to 'cuff you so out of spite I am keeping your XBOX because I have the 9mm AND the Badge.

Unfortunately our system of law enforcement has turned into a point based reward system.
Just as the recent thread describing Police Chiefs admitting that speeding tickets aren't about safety as we're told, but instead they're essentially an easy source of boosting revenues for the local city government.

Law enforcement officers are now focusing moreso upon trying to keep their jobs by scoring more points (contacts, tickets, arrests) instead of adhering to their oath of law enforcement officers in upholding the supreme law of the land the US Constitution.

Once again, it's all about the money. The root of all evil.

That's exactly what I thought when I read the story. The cop couldn't find what he was looking for, so he took the x box in a fit of pique.

Mobile revenue collectors and harassment and intimidation specialists, that's what our 'peace officers' have become. Just a reflection of the culture as a whole I’m afraid.

When it comes down to it is the victim's word against the officers which opens plenty of doors for abuse. Any corrupt cop can easily say I smelt "marijuana" on the driver. It's just that if you have an ideology that all cops are crooked and corrupt don't give them an opportunity to harass you.

Based on the experiences of my life, I want cameras rolling when I deal with these people.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Modern "law enforcement" (war on drugs, war on terror, war on liberties) is the very defination of that expression. These people are serving and protecting the wrong elements of our society.

The corruption rate is far higher than a few percent......

I was born into a family (both sides) of cops and firefighters. Some of them were honest, hard-working, and above reproach in the way they worked. Some of them were as corrupt as the day is long, and at family gatherings, the stories of harassment and theft and planting evidence would curl your hair! And the good ones who heard the same stories at these family gatherings? They just walked away and kept their mouths shut ... because, in the end, they're all BROTHERS. In my mind, the ones who heard and didn't speak up are just as compliant in the crimes as the ones who committed them and bragged about them. I was just a kid, and had no credibility, or I would have turned them in, myself.

I was so GLAD to get away from all of them when I left for college. And I never went home again.

Corruption really IS far more prevalent than most people know, and the racism against those who aren't white seems to have gotten no better, over the years. When the departments began hiring Latinos and African-Americans, you'd think things would have leveled out. But everyone, regardless of race and color, when they have "the power," are eager to exercise their "power" over whomever they consider "lesser" than they are.

Soooo

The cop didn't Find the Weed

But he took the X-box

This isn't fair because,

Now the guy has no way to play X-box while he smokes the rest of his weed.

Criminal justice should be criminal Justice, I would say this is more like Criminal Spite, "I couldn't find your weed so i'm going to make sure your no going to enjoy smoking it now"

Taking the x-box would have been a fair punishment from a Judge if he had been caught with the weed, it's about as harsh as I figure a weed sentence should ever get (no wii would be Just going too Damn Far Okay!!! don't even think it, it's not just a Game it's exercise)

I suggest

That if the man who had his xbox stolen wants vindication he should suggest that the officer be drug tested, because he probably got the xbox home and blazed before playing... and it will remain in his bloodstream for 30 days

oh? the police found this man was 'clean', he had no drugs on him, yet you somehow got a divination he is guilty of the charge as laid by this cop?

hmm, it could be I am uninformed on the matter, but as far as I know, there is nothing in the law that allows personal property to be seized on drug charges, except if said items are gained from money related to the crime, eg. if the man had been a dealer and the item was bought with drugmoney.

please, enlighten me, and link me to a piece of legislation proving me wrong?

so now the cop is also a drug fellon, without any amount of proof ?

Buddy, you should consider a career in the US law enforcement business, your mindset indicates you would fit right in..

This is a great post. This citizen was not presumed innocent. Rights were violated. The deputy committed the crime and should be charged.

There needs to be a police state/police oppression section here on ATS.
