Sorry Phage, my friends at JPA have the only blimp indiginous to the Sacramento area large enough to mount a light display; and it wasn't flying that night.

Furthermore, if some one were to loft something large enough to be seen in that video, it would have to be flying under a flight plan as it would pose a hazard to other air traffic in the area. Epsecially at night.

Kind of takes the Unidentified out of UFO.

Some one might want to shoot an E-mail to Dale Schornak(Sp?), the evening anchor at News10 (KXTV), to see if he has any additional info.

Dale's a High Power Rocket enthusiast (I think he's earned his multi-stage certificate), and would be in a good position to "debrief" Mr. Cardenas, the reporter who witnessed the object.

Might also be a good idea to request the transcript(s) of any air traffic control (ATC) recordings made ...and radar!

Check with Sacramento International Airport, Sacramento Executive Airport, and Mather Field Commercial (cargo) .

The Sacramento Police Department, Sacramento County Sheriff's Patrol, the California Highway Patrol, and the UC Davis Medical Center all operate helicopters in the area as well. Perhaps one or more of them might have seen something.

Especially if they had been alerted to the presence of an unknown aircraft in the vicinity by a reliable source, in this case, the pilot of a news copter.

sounds like it was very high for a blimp tho (seeing as footage was shot from helicopter)? And at indeterminate distance, seems like it'd have to be a big one. I'm guessing something else. I'm pretty impressed with this footage actually.

It isn't a blimp.

My thought was that it is being viewed from the left side (the red light) and slightly below. The display grid would be distorted from that viewpoint and may appear as randomly flashing lights.

I'm not sure what it actually is but this could fit the bill. Easy for the helicopter pilot to mistake its size and distance, in fact he says:
"Not knowing the size of the object, I couldn't determine how far away we were, but I believe it was some distance away as the image was fuzzy even through the PowerZoom camera."

I'm not sure the local tower would be notified if the display was being used.
