I flew on a small commuter plane once with a football team. All of them football players sat together in the rear of the plane. The pilot and co-pilot before takeoff had to rearrange the seating for everyone on the plane.

They had to scatter the large football players out over the area of the plane. They did this because while, with all the weight in the rear of the plane they could have taken off from the airport, they never would have been able to land due to weight/balance cause the nose of the plane would never be able to land nose first.
Cannot have obese seats in rear of plane, it makes the plane "tail heavy" and unable to land.

Needless to say we arrived safely at Salina Kansas.

Just like alcoholics or drug addicts need to treat their disease so do obese persons need to treat their disease.

I would love to see airlines charge ticket prices according to the weight of the passenges.

It would give a whole new meaning to a "reduced" fare.

Disability and or civil rights issues cannot continue to be defined in terms of "willful misconduct".

The five major manifestations of the disease of addiction in America today are alcohol, drugs, sex, food and money.

Alcohol, drugs and sex have taken big hits in the past twenty years, with MADD, tough drug laws, and STD. What does that leave for Americans to practice their addictions: FAT GAMBLERS.

Legislating special considerations and special privileges for people who do not practice temperance and moderation in their appetites, and classigying them "disabled" is just teaching others to play their own particular pet "disability" for special considerations.

"Willful Misconduct" disability and discrimination lawsuits remove personal responsibility from the equation.

Reminds me of the Flip Wilson line "The Devil made me do it!!!"

I do think there are some risks involved with people of this size in confined areas. I know someone said that they are asked to stay in their seats until everyone is evacuated, but what if one is spooked and rushes down the aisle like some sort of crazed rhino? It seems like they could easily block an exit or something. Not trying to fat bash, just wondering if this has ever happened.

Certainly sets a dangerous precedent doesn't it? I'm surprised this didn't first happen in the Sue S of A first. Think how many people can now sue for various reasons. I'm blind, I can't see the movie, I'm suing!

The only reason people get so fat is because they eat too much compared to the amount of energy they expend.

It's been said before, and people do not seem to get it. A depressed person does not have the energy needed to get up and jog around town everyday.

I was diagnosed with depression several years back, yet I still managed to get some exercise in, play Football (soccer) and to be honest, I lost weight.

Stop making excuses.

Bollocks.

I work 12 hour shifts and still cook each and every meal I have, from scratch, using fresh ingredients. It's actually alot cheaper than junk food and healthier.

Stop making excuses.

A few extra pounds can turn into depression, that causes so much weight to pile on.

As far as I know, many people are obese because they are simply depressed, and instead of having a friend to offer companionship, some turn to food for comfort, because people have turned their backs on them.

I've known a few people, myself included, that have had depression and none have "turned to food" or become fat. Just more excuses.

To get one seat for the price of two is discriminating against those of a slimmer frame or taller stature who cannot help the way they are built, whereas these fat beasts can do something about it, but many do not or find something else to blame their huge bulk on, never taking responsibility.

Being an "overeater" doesn't mean your addicted, I'd classify it simply as eating more than you can reasonably burn off. It is about striking a balance, which is really quite easy and not eating just because you feel "peckish".

It's this kind of thinking, where people feel that just because they feel hungry they must eat, that causes overeating. Our diets are laden with carbs and fats, so you have to think about what you eat.

The adverts on TV for those cereal bars that help "fight the temptation", the ones showing women as needing to snack on cakes all the time but they fight the "hunger" by eating one of these bars, are promoting this image of instant gratification when you really do not need to eat.

Were we not told by our parents when we were little and comlaining about being hungry to "wait for dinner"?

I know I was.

I tell the same to my kids now. They are always after snacks, biscuits, crisps etc. I may relent occasionally if dinner is going to be a while, but more often than not I tell them to bugger off and wait.

Seriously stop making excuses. I eat like absolute crap, but remain trim because I EXERCISE. It helps a lot. I once gained ten pounds of pure fat in a month and you know what I did? Quit eating as much crap and exercised. Now I'm fit again. Amazing huh? The only excuse for being obese is a genetic disorder.

You can read, can't you?

What the hell are you on about?

Making excuses? I'm certainly not making excuses for fat bastards. Where did you get that from?

I think that they should have a priority to the emergency exit aisles, aisle, and first row seats. You can't charge them more because you cannot fold down the seat in front of them to give them more room. You can, however, lift the armrest for fat/wide people.

Actually emergency exit seats cannot be occupied by the obese, infirm, disabled and young. It is an escape point were the rest of the passengers count on the person near the hatches to release and open the exit in the event of a crash landing.

During an emergency, wheel chair users and the obese are instructed to remain on their seats until the able bodied have exited in all modes of travel and in buildings. Either trained life savers remain with them or are sent in after the evacuations has been completed.

If you paid more attention and quoted the whole thing, you would have realized that I was referring to tall people being in the emergency exit aisle and not the obese, handicapped, infirmed, etc.

Quite alright,
Never been called Old Bean before. I might just start saying that. How weird is it for a semi redneck to call people old bean?

That's just silly. I think it is quite obvious who is handicapped through no fault of their own and a fat bastard. especially when you see them in the Airport terminal stuffing their faces at Burger King before squeezing themselves into the seat next to you and spilling over.

Wow, I can't imagine you getting away with calling someone a "blind bastard", "deaf jerkoff" or "crippled ass wipe." But if their disability isn't apparent and they are overweight, then it's okay to make value judgments about them.

People can be blind because they developed diabetes due to poor dietary and exercise habits. People can be cripped from a car accident driving drunk. People can be overweight because of MS and taking massive doses of steroids (which, by the way, also significantly increases your appetite).

They all have a physical handicap that limits them, you just want to discriminate against one group. At least be honest about it.

Despite what you claim, unless you have amazing powers of ESP, you don't know why someone is in a wheelchair. You don't know why someone who can walk needs the closest parking space. You don't know why someone is overweight.

Admit it -- YOU DON'T KNOW.

People have limited mobility for a variety of reasons and often it IS their own fault and doing. People become disabled because they did not do their physical therapy. Others lose their hearing because of not using ear protection. People do dangerous things which leave them disabled.

I can't imagine anyone putting forth a suggestion that everyone in a wheelchair "prove" they didn't bring their disability on themselves in order to get more space on the airplane.

Geez, what compassion.

It's not easy to feel compassion for the obese. You can't help but think they're greedy and eat too much and don't care about their physical appearance or health. It's not the same as a handicap, where the person has no control.

A body-builder doesn't usually have the big wide backside or Budha belly, and that's what's getting in the way in this airline seating debate.

They impose on other's space and not just by their size. It's spilling out (no pun intended) into everything as we accomodate to their needs.

They should pay for two seats, so it's a wake up call to them to do something about their size. They made a choice to eat, knowing full well this makes them expand in width. There's no mystery here. It's not pleasant to have to sit next to an overwieght person because it imposes on our space, so this is why they should pay for the extra room they take up, the same way we're only allowed so much baggage onboard.
