There are parts and communities within India which are incredibly backwards.
Frankly, India is such a microcosm of the world. You can find all sorts of people there, of all backgrounds and beliefs.
More importantly its also home to 1,000,000,000 people; 1/6th of humanity. As such there are bound to be horror stories emerging. If you think you can
do a better job policing 1/6th of the entire world's population, go give it a shot.
To judge this event on the whole of India is entirely irrational and anti-intellectual. Even if you percieve this to be a social problem brought on by
religion... and even if you make the huge leap and say that Hinduism caused this boy's death, then why would you criticise the Jews of Kerala, or the
Christians of Goa, or the Muslims of Hyderabad, the Sikhs of Punjab or the Buddhists of Dharamsala? Go ahead, why dont you tell me how the
"backwards" buddhist monks caused this boy's death...
India is a diverse place. More than you can ever image. If at all there is a communal aspect of society to be criticised for not intervening, it is
his local community. To call an entire nation backwards because of the action of a single community is unbelievably insulting.
We wouldn't dream of characterising America entirely by the actions of certain communities (ie the gangs, abortion clinic bombers, Jonestown
massacre, FLDS and Warren Steeds etc etc etc). How about you return the favour?
Im not saying all generalisations are wrong. Sometimes they are warranted and correct; but in this case you have failed to think, you have failed to
use your brain and you have failed to reach a logical conclusion. Try again.

Ok I'll Im stating that In Canada we try and live a certain life with certian cultures and traditions. You look at whom developed and explored this
country, most of the rivers and lakes are named after French, Scottish and Englishmen. As harsh it is was what we did to treat the natives, ( none
from my family background was involved) and we no longer do it to them today. You can bet sure as there cold poop in a dead cougar that they were
waring violently amongst thier different tribes too. They battled eachother well before we were here, we just seen an opportunity and took charge of
our own destiny. And now for the most part they can Thank us for snowmobiles, our rifles, booze, free dental, healthcare and education and random
allowances of cash just because they are native. Hell we are all native on this planet.
Regardless nowadays we are allowing Canada to be flooded with many foriegners that bring these ass backwards traditions and values of them.
You look at the gangs nowadays, the hells angels is now more like the shriners or elks lodge compared to the middle eastern and asian gangs running
amok. The stats are out there on the crimes and whoms commiting them alongside gang violence.
Canada in my mind is probably the best place in the world to live, there has to be one place thats the best and I figure it's Canada, to bad its
being overrun with the same ideals and ideologies that we left and or are trying to avoid.

Sir.. defining something as ass backwards or not, is again a point of view.
Now whether you want to 'cleanse' your populous of certain practices(or cultures) that you perceive as backward (and maybe they ARE backward) in
your varied cultural cross section, then by all means go ahead and do it.
After all, it is up to you(Canada) to decide and define what is 'Canadian' or not, and we will all understand when you go 'Mein Kampf'
vis-a-vis this. 
But then leave it at that. Let what happens 'ootside' Canada as just that..
