Very romantic yet I believe more upon the line of a much slower breakdown.

I believe that this was the choice given to Congress before the 700 Billion dollar bailout.

It was we let the ship sink now.....as in destroy any chance of an Obama victory....or we continue to bail the ship out for a while and slowly let it sink while we get some liferafts out for the select few.

This is why the jaws of congress dropped aka Linda Lovelace style.
