Trouble is, from what i can make out, this was in the UK. Not in the US. Its not the sort of thing you normally hear about in the UK. At least, not
that i can recall anything of this kind being on MSM (Sky News)
I think America and the UK share a lot of common culture.
The ones I play with on XBOX LIVE are pretty darn close to being American. Their speech, their jokes...
But nevertheless, maybe we're all screwed!

Actually I reread the story and got part of the OP wrong... his house was apparently one of a number on a block to be razed and he had already refused
offers for alternative housing... my mistake but given the fact that people are killing themselves rather than be foreclosed on... it was somewhat
understandable that i read something different.
None the less... I was wrong.
The hearing heard that the block where Mr Phyall had his flat was to be demolished but he had refused 11 offers of alternative accommodation and
eventually the housing association had gone to court to repossess the property.
At the time of his death Mr Phyall, who suffered from mental illness and had attempted suicide before, was the only person left inside the 1960s block
when the rest of the properties were boarded up.
Recording a verdict of suicide, Mr Burge said First Wessex Housing Group had done all they could to help Mr Phyall but he was "irrationally opposed
to moving".
What was it Oscar Wilde said about England and America... that they were one people separated by a common language.

Did you bother to read the article, or you just like posting knee-jerk bull#?
He was British. Clues?
It happened in Bishopstoke
The coroner was from Central Hampshire
The housing was First Wessex Housing Group
Americans do not call apartments flats

You know people work their asses off to get a house, then when these bankers get retard or a government wants to rape the people, you call them crazy
cause they cant figure out how to deal with a said situation. really go away..
No I won't "go away"! If you can't handle anothers personal opinion why are you here?
If you had taken the time to read the article you would have realised this WAS a "crazy" person with mental illness.
He was making a pointless statement in a desperate state of mind in a situation that was unchangable....his flat was to be demolished and he refused
to accept alternative accomodation on 11 seperate occasions!
He could have visited the bank in question with said chainsaw and made more of a statement there don't you think AND lived to tell the tale with 3
square meals a day and all the accomodation he needed....free!

Hey Jack! He wasn't American!
Also... he was mentally ill and suicidal to begin with.
So take your self-righteous anti-American rhetoric elsewhere.
And oh yeah.. try "READING THE ARTICLE" next time before spewing venom.

Today upon hearing of this Obama announced that he will be raising the tax on Chain Saws and Chain Saw Oil.
Remember that chainsaws kill people, people do not kill people.
Obama also went on to say that he will be doing everything possible to restrict the use of chainsaws in America.
After this announcement sales of Chain Saws and Chain Saw oil skyrocketed.

Sounds like a smart man to me.
Look up the statistics on how many people kill themselves daily, and how. If he'd simply cut himself or taken a bunch of pills, he would have been a
statistic. But a chainsaw...well, that raises some eyebrows and gets plenty of attention. The man wanted attention to be called to his death, and
why he did it. Mission accomplished, I'd say; most suicidal people don't have enough forethought to make their deaths count for something. Now
everyone who hears this story is going to actually think about the economic crisis, especially within the housing market. And since most people who
watch the news have the delusion that the world doesn't affect them, this man's suicide might bring the issue a little closer to home.
Personally, I'd pick a quicker way, though; perhaps a stick of dynamite.

I pity anyone who gets that desperate.
Maybe if he'd had a few more friends, or if his neighbours had been a bit more concerned about how the situation might affect the mental state of
those in the same boat as they were (rather than focussing on their own tragedy), things could have turned out differently. At the end of the day some
people cope better with stress than others. Most of us need a little help from our friends, at least.
I see this an an indictment against our society.
And I'm ashamed to say, as a member of that society, it's an indictment on me.

I can think of two places it would fit, and a few more where it wouldn't; the latter choices would arouse more attention, I think. I can hear it
now... "last night some crazy Texan shoved a stick of dynamite up his nose..."
But seriously, this economic situation for which the man killed himself is getting out of hand. When I look at the bills, I see numbers much larger
than my rapidly diminishing paycheck. More disturbing is that I can't go near the hunting department of Wal-Mart without hearing nine people talking
about buying guns to defend their properties. I've even heard a few idiots talking about gunning for the White House; normally I would laugh and
wait for the guys in black to jump out of nowhere, but I keep hearing this more and more. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but here around my town
things are turning bad, and fast. Not to say that I'm looking to buy dynamite, mind you.

It was an electric chainsaw too. That certainly would not be my first choice.

I know exactly where this guy got that idea. I was waiting on a report that someone would take a chainsaw to their head.
I saw it on that redone version of the Andromedia Strain with Benjamin Bratt. There was a guy in a drug store and they are watching him on camera and
he takes the chainsaw and beheads himself. TV even showed it and I remember thinking WOW...that's a hell of a way to go and quick too. Someone is
bound to see this and think yep that's the way I am going to do it.
And here we are....

If this man put as much thought into making money or his job as he did engineering a gruesome way to kill himself ... he might not have had anything
to worry about with respect to money problems.
I say he had mental issues way before his house was on the chopping block (no pun intended).

Reread the article or reread my revised OP... the whole block was slated for demolition... he was offered alternatives and he refused to leave. Plus
he was mentally ill.

This guy didn't want to lose his house, didn't want to lose everything he owned, and everything he worked his whole life for.. give some respect,
its not our fault the PTB feel like raping the crap out of our country.

Yes it is sad and I do have sympathy, but still, I think its more sad the dude didnt have the mental or spiritual tools or philosophy to cope with
such an unsurprising and common event. I mean really, all one has to do is look at a homeless crack head and realize they have it good even if they
too are on the streets. People put so much value into their possessions, you would think they were possessed by them, what makes you cut your own
head off with a chainsaw? Objects? society? or a lack of understanding of what truly matters? I think its simply personal problems. Especially if
you would do this, what about your family and friends, very shallow and selfish no matter how you slice it. I dont blame the guy though, its just
more evidence the television programming is working so well.

I can imagine the Late night jokes on this one. Electric chain saw pictures and instructions sent as seasons greetings to a former boss or broker
along with the article.
It reminds me of people jumping out of buildings when the stock market crashed in 1929......No doubt more bizarre news like this to come. One of the
worst I've heard is people setting themselves on fire. Let's not give them any ideas like in some polls and surveys either. Worst and most memorable
painful ways to die etc.
