A man deliberately beheads himself with a chainsaw

uk.news.yahoo.com

A man deliberately cut off his own head with a chainsaw because he did not want to give up his repossessed home, an inquest has heard.

David Phyall, 50, used string to tie the Black & Decker power tool to a leg of a snooker table in his sitting room.

He then taped up the on button and plugged it into a timer, Winchester Coroner's Court was told.

Mr Phyall, who had had a small amount to drink but had not taken any drugs, then lay face up under the snooker table and put the chainsaw against his neck.

He used a piece of the tool's cardboard box to cushion the blades from his neck and then set the timer - usually used to turn lights on and off - to start up the chainsaw for 15 minutes.

When it started, it sliced three-quarters through his neck and into his right shoulder, only stopping when his T-shirt was dragged into the blades.

OUCH!!!

I can think of far better ways (and less painful) ways of killing myself than with a chainsaw. Messy too.

The real story however is why.

As the housing crisis continues to spread and deepen we read more and more stories of people perferring to kill themselves (abit less dramatically) than suffer the humiliation of losing their homes.

Its sad. In 1997 I lost my home... not due to the housing crisis or a bad mortgage... but still (actually I sold it to avoid losing it... same thing) and it tore me apart. So I can sympathize...

... But with a chainsaw???

I made some mistakes in this OP but instead of rewriting it I will post a copy of my correction on page two.

Actually I reread the story and got part of the OP wrong... his house was apparently one of a number on a block to be razed and he had already refused offers for alternative housing... my mistake but given the fact that people are killing themselves rather than be foreclosed on... it was somewhat understandable that i read something different.

None the less... I was wrong.

I guess he was making a statement and it would have been one thing if he knew the bankers in question would have found him.... but for Christ's sake pity the friends or family that find you... especially like that.

This guy didn't want to lose his house, didn't want to lose everything he owned, and everything he worked his whole life for.. give some respect, its not our fault the PTB feel like raping the crap out of our country.

That's some nasty ugly, especially considering he wasn't doped up or liquored into a state of numbness.

Sheesh . . .

Personally, if I was going for the big nap, I'd do it with a mitt of pills and a quart of Glenfiddich.

I have to agree. While I am sure that losing his home might have caused some mental distress I have to wonder at the how he committed this. I can also understand alcohol contributing to this to a degree as well but it sounds like he didn’t have much to drink.

Maybe it was more of a statement but I cannot see why he chose a chainsaw. With so many other ways that are quicker, easier, and less painful. Though after cutting through the artery he pretty much bled out in seconds still that would be a painful few seconds. I really have to wonder though if the man did not have additional underlying mental issues that have went unnoticed by others.

It is sad no matter what when someone decides to take their life.

There's something wrong with people who would rather kill themselves than "suffer the humiliation." Since when have we been some Samurai culture? We've got people intentionally getting pregnant and making a deal to stay unmarried to collect because they would rather stay up until 3AM getting high with their friends than work for a living (about 40% of my family and childhood friends) and they seem perfectly happy living in a state of perpetual humiliation despite constant requests from those around them that they take a chainsaw to their respective necks for living a life of blight.

People have been losing everything theyve had and climbing back over and over for as long as there have been people with things to lose. This guy was a nut and clearly couldnt cope. Like the stupid woman I saw in a car accident the other day on the side of the road screaming about how she was going to kill herself because her car was totaled.

At times life can suck. Deal with it and move on or you're most likely not worth the gift of life in the first place. With any luck that type of person will be reincarnated as a cat or dog and be coddled in the next life.

Yeah, I'm mad. I see this crap everyday. From little things like speeding tickets to big things like losing a home. The longer you flail about crying "woe is me" the longer you're going to be in the situation you so dislike.

The heck is a snooker table? Did the guy do this for publicity sake or what? Sad that he decided to go through with it and sad that he died so violently at his own hands. Hope the family is ok, but doubt it.

Now you gotta love a story like this. Man buys home he can't afford. Man sees neighbor get a new Benz. Man leases new Benz he can't afford. Man sees neighbor get a pool, Man buys pool he can't afford.

Man can't pay his bills. So man slices his head off with a chainsaw.

Americans, gotta love them. Everyone thinks they're entitled to the best, the biggest, the fastest. Except not everybody can be a movie star. Only some people.

Who's at fault more? Democrats for pushing the banks to give out loans to poor people or the poor people for thinking they deserved to live better than their neighbor who's a doctor or a lawyer?

I think going Postal would have been more of a statement than killing himself.

No doubt he had some BIG ONES.

Now thats dedication to your cause! Dang, I'd be wanting a redo on the tox screen on this one if I where his relatives.

Snooker is a pool game thats very popular. The pockets are smaller and you have to be much more exacting in your shots. We used to play straight pool on snooker tables to make it harder back home.

He didn't want to lose his house so he lost his head?

I feel deeply sorry for him and his family but it just seems like a coward's way out to me.

Having seen the affects suicide has on family I personally believe it to be the most selfish thing a person can do. At the same time I feel sorry that someone cannot think beyond their own issues to see the effects on others.

I think this man had other issues people had yet to recognize. Why can people not move beyond objects.

A snooker table is better known as a pool or billiards table.

As others have said, he probably did it out of sheer despair and also to make a statement.

Now I don't condone suicide one bit, but I would rather him do that to himself than grab a rifle, climb a clock tower and start shooting to get his point across.

Of course having said that, losing your house (and I'm on the brink myself) isn't the end of the world, there are a lot worse off than me/him/us.

I would of just burned it down and kept my head. A house isn't worth either really. Get over it and go on with life my goodness. Too many people on this earth have it alot worse than that guy or anyone losing a home. Just plain ignorant if you ask me.

I think I'm going to adapt the word snooker as my new insult. That snooker really made me mad!!! I love it. Still sad about the guy though. People at the lending institution sure were a bunch of freakin snookers!

Oh God!

That is BRUTAL! What a way to go! That must have been a mess since the skin must have been stretched all throughout the chain and strands of flesh torn up and flung out. Ewwww! Far too slow a method for me. LOL!

A nice warm bath with a nice fast bleed to put me to sleep. I certainly wouldn't kill myself under any circumstances but this method would be #1) Cheaper #2) FAR less painful #3) You can have an open casket waking #4) Shows depression verses extreme self hating anger. #5) Why make your carbon footprint any worse with chainsaw emissions?! LOL. Oh wait... He WAS environmentally responsible by using an electric one and shut it off after 15 minutes. HAHAHA.

Reminds me of the Andromeda Strain remake... The guy in the convenience store hacks off his own head with a chainsaw while standing.

ouch......a freind of mine's father killed himself by cutting his throat using a circular table saw...he set the blade as high up as it would go...turned it on and thrust himself neck first on the spinning blade.....took his head clean off.

and he did it after dinner w/ the family...he got up..washed his hands...went out to his shop...and ..ZIP....did the deed.

I have no tolerance for suicide's.....but going that way takes balls of steel.

Trouble is, from what i can make out, this was in the UK. Not in the US. Its not the sort of thing you normally hear about in the UK. At least, not that i can recall anything of this kind being on MSM (Sky News)
