Top Republican senators oppose automaker bailout

<<  1    2    3    4  >>

Topic started on 16-11-2008 @ 01:25 PM by GamerGal

WASHINGTON – Top Republican senators said Sunday they will oppose a Democratic plan to bail out Detroit automakers, calling the U.S. industry a "dinosaur" whose "day of reckoning" is coming. Their opposition raises serious doubts about whether the plan will pass in this week's postelection session.
news.yahoo.com...

And so it goes. The Republicans give their friends hundreds of billions of dollars. But when people who don't own them ask for money, it's socialism. Any ways, I guess we'll let the people who actually hire Americans go under while the friends and owners of the GOP get our tax money. Don't forget McCain SUSPENDED his campaign to make sure his owners got the money.

Wow, did you get those talking points directly from the Democrat National Committee?

These are the same republicans who OPPOSED the financial bail out and caused it to fail the first time. Senate Republicans advised House republicans to vote against the financial bail out, and they did. Perhaps you should be getting angry at your own political party, who is throwing money at whoever asks for it.

Get the facts. Stop the propaganda.

Go Richard Shelby! He opposed the original bailout and spoke out against if from the beginning on MSM, on local news, and in letters with constituents. He has been a strong supporter of fiscally sound policies for a very long time.

Also in case you didn't know Alabama has an automobile industry with a $5 billion payroll. Alabamas low taxes and non-union status has attracted car manufacturers that are -get this- profitable! Why prop up a business model that is going to continue to lose money? His stance against this bailout is against unions, shotty business practices, and has nothing to do with 'who owns him'.

Pure drivel.
*2nd edit* But McCain....

Sorry, but your propaganda has no place here. The article was about SENATE REPUBLICANS, and your statement was that:

The Republicans give their friends hundreds of billions of dollars. But when people who don't own them ask for money, it's socialism. Any ways, I guess we'll let the people who actually hire Americans go under while the friends and owners of the GOP get our tax money.

The TRUTH is that its your DEMOCRATS giving their friends the auto labor unions billions of dollars, and that your PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA SUPPORTED both bailouts. If you want to try to spread partisan propaganda, this is the wrong topic to do it on.

Don't like bail outs? Then perhaps you shouldn't vote for the party that has supported and backed both so far.

Oh, and lets get real here - both the finance and the auto industry employ millions of Americans. You can't decry one and then support another on that basis. Well you can, but that would just be following the propaganda and not the facts.

Top Republican senators oppose automaker bailout, this is the title of the news story. Where the GOP says our money is to go to their friends. If you aren't their friend you don't get it.

You really are blinded by your partisanship aren't you? Your friends in the Democrat party favor this bail out because their lobbyists WORK FOR THE AUTO INDUSTRY. They favor this bail out because they have the support of AUTO UNIONS WHICH HAVE BANKRUPTED THE INDUSTRY THROUGH LEGACY COSTS.

Republicans in the House and Senate OPPOSED BOTH BAILOUTS. Guess what? They have lobbyists and contributors in the finance industry, just like the Democrat party has theirs in the auto industry.

Please get the facts and stop believing every thing your political party tells you.

Just slap a bunch of pork on it and they will vote for it just like they did the bailout.

"friends" okay, you want to play? The manufacturers that are asking for the bailout are out of Detroit and are losing money partly because they have to pay for union benefits, like being paid to not work at GM... and other costly, ineffective, and counter-intuitive business practices. Truth is that these unions typically lean left and vote left in large numbers; these are the Democrats friends. Not the GOP.

No they didn't. McCain is Republican Senator and he stopped his campaign to get it passed. He made attack ads against Obama and the Dems for not supporting it. Or are you claiming McCain is a democrat, and Bush?

15 Republican Senators voted against the original bailout, 9 Democrat Senators voted against the original bailout. If I had any idea which number were higher I'd know which party stood more solidly in support of the bailout. But then again this topic was supposed to be about the auto bailout, right?

There is a REASON as to why they are refusing to allow automakers to receive these funds..

And that is, even with the bailout, they have no chance to survive.

And just to clear up a little confusion .. or ignorance.. or both ..

The $700 billion dollar bailout was passed for the most part, by Democrats... Republican leaders had to beg on their knees to get fellow Republicans to pass the bill .. and many who did got voted out of office.

By the second vote for the bail out more then half of both parties voted for it.

The banks cannot fail.. without the banks, we cannot operate..

We can live without GM and their over paid employees.. if anything, a newer better auto company will start up to take it's place.

McCain and Bush are liberal spenders, yes..

Both parties leaders supported the bailout. McCain, and Obama.

Kinda like.. what the hells the difference between them? Nothing.

OOooooh! Caps lock and all!

Since this thread is regarding the Senate, maybe we should look at the actual votes. Specifically, the Republican Senate votes.

I suppose you're right. Republicans in the Senate did "OPPOSE THE BAILOUT". Well, at least a minority of 15 did. It's unfortunate that the majority of Senate Republicans actually supported it.

I suppose, using your highly partisan logic, we can also say that "SENATE DEMOCRATS OPPOSED THE BAILOUT" since a minority of Democrats were in opposition as well.

What was it you said earlier? Ah yes...

You are simply unbelievable.

Article: REPUBLICAN SENATORS

McCain is 1 senator.

By the way, what about your Democrat Senator - excuse me - Democrat President Elect Barack Obama? He supported the financial bailout, and now he is demanding a auto industry bailout. DId you forget about that fact?

Thanks but no thanks on your partisan propaganda. 15 republicans voted against it, only 10 democrats (if you include the independents as democrats) voted against it.

He was 1 of 34, the MAJORITY of Republicans who voted for it. Except none of those Senators SUSPENDED their campaign to vote for this. They didn't make attack ads attacking Obama and the Dems for not supporting it. They did however, with McCain and Bush, claim that not passing this would destroy America's economy.
