I was just outside and saw something I've not seen before. Above my neighbor's roof a spark of red light kind of like I would expect to see if someone was standing on top of their house smoking a cigarette appeared, traveled relatively fast SE to NW, went maybe 3 or 4 degrees across the sky in that direction, and then disappeared.

It was moving slower than I'd expect a falling star but faster than a plane and was maybe visable for no more than a half a second or so. I didn't hear any engine or see any other lights at all, but for some reason my mind said "afterburner" when I saw it. We have a moderate cloud cieling tonight and I believe whatever it was was below the clouds as it didn't seem to be at all hazey.

Has anyone else seen something like this before? Do meteors or falling debris ever burn red?
