Obama's Transparent Presidency: Weekly YouTube Addresses
www.huffingtonpost.com
President-elect Obama's office gave the media a new way to present him as Franklin Roosevelt 2.0 by announcing Friday that it will be posting
weekly addresses - fireside chats for the web generation - on YouTube.
The first address will appear on Change.gov this Saturday, after it airs in audio. An Obama spokesperson says that this innovation is just the
beginning of the digital, transparent presidency. The plan appears to be in the mold of what the campaign did with videos like "Four Days in Denver"
and Campaign Manager David Plouffe's conversations on the state of the race. (visit the link for the full news article)

I will be the first to admit I am not a huge YouTube fan... I watch things that are sent to me or are related to an article I am reading or something
like that but it is not my first go-to place for news.
I guess its my age or something but while I use the internet extensively it is nowhere near as satisfying as sitting down with a newspaper, book or
magazine. The internet lacks the tactile aspect I guess.
Still I am web savvy enough to know this is a new and interesting approach... so many of the young people and college students helped elect Mr. Obama
that this is one way to stay in touch with his core base... and for that matter to hopefully keep them engaged enough to be the bedrock of his
re-election campaign.
I think he will find however with this constituency if he doesn't produce results they like... they won't necessiarily be there for him in 2012.

I think that's a great idea, a very modern way to keep young people engaged in politics.
It will be interesting to see how the time is used, what is discussed and just how genuine his approach is. It's harder to fake sincerity in front of
a camera, which is why I think Bush had such an image problem.
But if Obama continues with the strength and apparent sincerity he's shown throughout his campaign, it can only be a great thing.

It should be interesting that is for sure but the real question is will he keep at it if his presidency sours.

Nah, I don't think that is the real question, as I don't expect his presidency to sour.
I think that this is a huge step forward for our poliics in general. It really is funny though to see how much the Obama campaign used the digital
medium and the McCain Campaign didn't.
Folks who don't know how to use these media will be lost and ran over by those who do. I just wonder if the Repubs will be able to catch up.
Either way, this is good for all of us, because it sets a precedent for the future Administrations to be measured against.

Perhaps its my age but I don't expect any presidency to live up to the ideals it expounds during the campaign... the dream of "Camelot" as it were
was just that, a dream JFK was no better than any of them... his early death just makes him look better.
I hope you are right but I am not holding my breath.... I have no delusions... Obama is after all a politician.

How is this transparency? It is just Obama or one of his guys giving their version of what's going on. Similar to the radio address. Maybe different
media form but not transparency. If he really wants transparency, he should invite Rush or Sean or some non-partisan individual to stay in the White
House and monitor what the Obama administration is doing. Now that would be transparency.

It will be interesting to see if comments are enabled or disabled on the youtube account.
Now that would make good reading!

Did you just call Rush or Sean non-partisan or did you call for a partisan or a non-partisan?
Actually real Transparenyc would not require an intercessor of any kind and would expose phone calls to and from the whitehouse, energy bills, list of
people who have attended parties there, etc.
You will never have transparency leveraging a third party to be the intercessor.

He posted his first Weekly Address:
It seems pretty basic and calls for immediate help from congress for unemployment and wants everyone to come together during the economic crisis...
I don't know if this new version of the Fire Side chat will be anythning super special but it's deffinately a new way of approaching weekly
addresses.
Edit: fixed youtube link

They're disabled, and for good reason. After viewing a very large amount of ignorant threads on Obama myths, I know that there would be a constant
stream of total BS in the comments section.

It's a very good idea but it is in no way 'transparency'.
It's a tech-savy POTUS using modern technology to get his propaganda out and to push his agenda in his own words. Free publicity.
Transparency would be him releasing his original birth certificate.

LOL! Good one!
A better idea may be to allow individual citizens to post questions or concerns via YouTube or e-mail for President Obama to address.
I like this innovation and look forward to the weekly addresses.

Yes, he should waste his time with every conspiracy theory out there whilst Rome burns.
Issues such as the global economic meltdown, global warming and Somalian piracy really should take a back seat to questions of which continent
did his parents have sex on.
I am proud to see that in these troubled times folks are able to pull together and focus on the issues that truly matter.
