Medically Unfit Soldiers Sent to Iraq

Topic started on 31-3-2004 @ 05:08 PM by DeltaChaos

This is no big deal, but I just wanted to point out something that is generally normal military policy. I think most service members have a story to attest to this. I do.

This quote is the one that got me:

Originally printed in the Stars and Stripes
"I told them about my back," said Scott, a 43-year-old truck driver. "I was told to let sleeping dogs lie." He said he didn't have his medical paperwork, and "they didn't seem real interested. I was breathing. I had a pulse. They needed bodies."

I had an accident of the Black Hawk Down variety while training that barred me from re-enlistment, and then prevented a very hard-fought effort to get a waiver to get back in to go to Afghanistan this month.

The thing is that if you are injured and still in, you are expected to do your job, but if you get out, your injury will always prevent you from doing your job, even if you really want to do it.

Here's the full story:

Man, I wish I was that guy. Only not 43 years old, of course!
