The draft ISN'T around anymore. Registering for selective service is a way for them to keep a data base of people who could be called upon if a national emergency of such magnitude occured that they would be FORCED to reinstitute the draft on an emergency basis. One of the current drawbacks to not registering for is that you would be disqualified from getting money from the USG to go to college. It kind of sucks that they force you to do it like that.

You know sir, you are correct I have recently turned 18(last June) but I also believe that I should be able to use my rights supposedly protected under the constitution to say "no" to registering...and those last three sentences were kind of harsh and bias don't you think? Just because I don't register for something I do not agree with I should leave the country? I also did not know that being a citizen of this country I had to sign up to possibly be drafted someday into the military unwillingly. Wheres the freedom in that when the government can decide what I register for or don't...

Well, they are your only alternatives, are they not? You either comply, or run.

You and I are similar, sort of. Am I gung-ho about the military? No. Am I "willing"? No. But will I accept the fact that being male in this country includes the requirement that I serve it, if absolutely needed? Yes.

Again, you're just complaining about responsibility. I see where you're coming from, I think, but the responsibility issue outweighs your concerns.

Well if enough people refused to register change would be possible but when the government terroizes people to register and they do then you are basically giving into it. Just read the letter that they send out they make it seem like they are trying to help you so you are no persecuted. Most likely I will have to register and if I ever do get drafted I will just not go...I just thought I would bring this up because when my mom read the letter she was suprised and so was I because I thought that the draft was gone but that's were I was wrong. If I had a lot of money to get some good lawyers I would be willing to take this to court as violating my rights.

Answer this one question: Can you accept the fact, that as a condition of your male citizenry, you must become part of the SS?

Or you reject that acceptance?

Well... college deferment only worked for a few years then there was the good ol' "Lottery". I think my birthday ended up being drawn somewhere around 350. Only the the first 150 or so ended up being drafted.

If there ever were a re institution of the draft you have options. You could desert. You could outright reject and face jail. You could declare yourself a conscientious objector.

Encarta
Two courses, or forms of alternate service, are open to conscientious objectors who are so classified by their draft board. A man may refuse military induction altogether and fulfill his term of service in a civilian capacity, for example, in hospital service or nonprofit welfare work. A conscript who opposes fighting but not military service itself can be inducted and given an assignment requiring no carrying or use of arms.

Basically, you would most likely be a medic.

I think that in this day and age, if we are all equal, then women should be included on the list.

His issue, I think, isn't the aversion to fighting. His issue, like just about every other kid his age, is about a problem with authority.

Except he takes it one step further, and questions the motives behind the authority.

If this were a father-son scenario, he would be asking "Why?", to which the father would simply say, "Because I said so".

I cannot accept that for the main reason that it violates my rights and if I decided not to register I believe I should not be punished. The punishment as it says on the back of the letter I scanned is a $250,000 fine or prison...that is crazy that is more than my parents make in like 4-5 years.

Just stop being a baby and do it. There is no draft and the likelihood of one is remote. Of course there is one Democrat who wants it and they do have complete control of the government Hmmmm

I went through the same thoughts. Of course it was a little different in that we had a Draft and my chances of going to Vietnam were almost unavoidable. In the end, you do what you have to do. I registered while many of my peers ran to Canada like Geese. I fared a lot better than they did.

You will grow out of the Anarchy nonsense in a couple of years and you may want to earn a living to support yourself and your future family.

Perhaps you should write Congressman Rangel (D) for his opinion? Link to info.
WASHINGTON - Lawmaker Says Volunteer Military May be Overwhelmed by Military Challenges in Iran, North Korea and Syria requiring more troops who will have to be drafted

Congressman Charles Rangel today introduced new legislation to reinstate the military draft that will include draftees up to 42 years of age.

Rangel is always good for a laugh.

So then you don't consider yourself a citizen. Got it.

Well my username is just after the show but I do support a democracy just one that follows its own rules. Either way I have to register which I understand, although I know what they are doing is wrong and unconstitutional but if I do ever get drafted I won't be going anywhere except for court(as long as they don't take away all my rights and amendments by that time).

I have citizenship because of my mom to me it really doesn't matter. I do like this country though and what it once stood for(at that time I would have been proud to call myself a citizen) but now rights are being taken away and the country is taking a turn for the worst. As corny as it sounds I also believe that war is never the answer to anything(but thats a whole other discussion I guess).
