go ahead and join world war three. all i know is that we have way too much power. im amazed at your faith that people are smart enough not to launch
nukes all over the place. well, i guess you do have reason. obamas smart enough not too, but bush would have blown the worl to smithereens. maybe

It's not faith, its speculation based on logic.
but bush would have blown the worl to smithereens. maybe theres hope after all...
No. Bush doesn't have the sole power. In this case,
you are ignorant and misguided.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.
According to Ben Rich in Skunkworks, Lockheed Martin looked at - and actually proposed to the USAF - a solid steel "energy bomb" to be dropped from
an SR71 flying at Mach 3 and 80,000ft. The impact would have been akin to a small meteor impact.
The idea was not taken up, because at the time there were no reliable means of hitting the target properly.
Nowadays, with GPS and laser designation there are means to do it.
The only problem is that there are no SR-71's capable of hauling the load now, and nothing in the inventory flies fast or high enough to pull the
idea off.

Have a look at Intelgurl's thread on Blackswift, the "black" hypersonic project.
According to her it's a Mach 6 (100,000 Ft Alt) reconnaissance and perhaps strike aircraft that is currently being built for testing.

Yeah, saw that - when/if its airborne it would be a perfect platform for it.
At the moment though, its not.
Although it struck me that a Foxbat, or possibly even a Blackjack might be an interesting platform.

The idea had been around for a long time. I bet they've even had prototypes of this weapon type for a long time too.
I remember reading in ben riches book about skunkworks where they initially wanted to use the sr-71 as an interceptor and a bomber. Part of the bombs
they wanted to develop were simple metal rods that the plane would drop. they figured that metal weights with little to no wind resistance falling
from heights around 85k feet would have the same impact and force as a small meteorite or tiny astroid. blast a city off the map and leave no
radiation.

Joke?
Look at the numbers - 1 Kg at 1,000 metres a second has similar kinetic energy to the chemical energy to HE. It would be about as destructive as
your basic, basic explosive bomb - but better for certain types of target.
They've been dropping kinetic projectiles - aka flechettes - from aircraft since WWI.
But the Blackswift won't be dropping anything, as it was recently cancelled.

ps. heres the link www.weeklystandard.com...
That weapon was developed way way back.
There are tons of posts on ATS mentioning it, I wrote a few of them myself on threads about space weaponry.
Here is a link to a popsci article on the top 20 weapons in the world. The Rods from God being one of them.
www.popsci.com...
The 17th one is the Rods from God if the link doesn't take you right to that pic.
There are worse things in space to worry about, other than depleted uranium sticks, that we are in control of.

uhh isnt this essentailly the same idea as Tom Clancy's Endwar? Which was just recently released.
Clive Cussler book "PLAGUE SHIP" featured it last year.
Dropping things from airplanes dates back to WWI - as earlier poster
noted flechettes were among the earlist projectiles. In one case man
was mounted on a mule when hit by flechette - it went all the way though
him, though the mule and buried itself in ground.

which shows how powerful gravity can be. to intelligent life, i wonder when these weapons will be ready. some are pretty insane......
but even if we find a replacement weapon with the same power as a nuke, that means that we have alot of nukes to do nothing with. how can we dispose
of them??

What people call "rods from god" was actually called "project crow bar", and was initially developed in the mid eighties.
It is a satellite or space shuttle deployed weapon, that is nothing more than a 2" dia. x 3' long tungsten bar with rudimentary guidance, that was
to be dropped from orbit as a deterent to massed waves of soviet armor.
Forward scouting and recon units would paint the armor columns with lasers as the deployment vehicle passed over head in LEO.
They would rain down in waves upon the armor columns as they made their way west.
Another variant was to use a tactical ballistic missle to deliver grouped salvos of a dozen or so per missle instead of the hundred that the orbital
system would use.
More than enough kinetic energy to kill a tank or pulverize a surface bunker.
Another type was designed as a ship killer, a foot in dia. and 6-8' long, with a more active gbuidance system.
It would have had the ablility to punch all the way through any know vessel, all the way through and out the bottom..
I first read about it in a book by a weapons designer detailing some of the more inventive ideas they had come up with.
Another scary one was "firefly"? a micro air vehicle the size of a large fly
that would carry a microphone or a small camera..Pretty benign, until you remove the camera or microphone and replace with a small amount of
explosive.
One by itself istn scary but imagine a swarm of them getting into a bunker through the air vents, then congregating and exploding.

I dont think America would sit back after a nuclear attack and think of the collateral damage before pushing the big red button. Infortunatley MAD
seems the way its all going to end and it looks like it could all be kick strated by a couple of grenades and ak-47s in mumbai. never minde just
enjoy every weekend as it comes no point worrying about it
