Its very true,

It will probably happen some time, though

Now?

10 yrs

20,000 yrs?

Who Knows.

Basically it is very much an event I believe that will be triggered by other earth changes that will increase the volcanic activity of that plate and region.

Maybe if it just grows as it has it will be ok for even our grand children's grandchildren, but I had a thought recently on this very issue.

Whilst as I do keeping a very close eye on the current Glacial and Antartic ice shelf situations and stability, and the possibility of a pretty fast rise in global Sea Levels.

Well as this Volcanic islands collapse would actually be caused by one half of the Island sliding from the other to the sea.

This being caused by the superheating and expansion, and also the lubricant effect of the rising steam/Water within certain of the pillars of vertical permeable rock running along the centre of the island, then obviously a large rise in sea levels could allow a lot more water to seep into the permeable rock, and even trickle down unlike till now to the very hot core of the Volcano super heating and expanding the already present water in these pillars above the sea level.

I theorised that the biggest risk therefore of this event is probably this, one event leading to triggering this off, rather than the waiting game of an event that probably will happen but is not guaranteed.

The effects would be quite catastrophic to the entire West coast of America and would make the recent tsunami in Asia pale into insignificance.

Feedback and nature is not grasped in its entirety by many people.

kind regards

Elf.

The reason i posted the 10,000 years thing in my above post though, and mentioned something triggering it, is that it is unlikely to happen on its own before that.

There has been quite a bit of research since Dr Simon day first did his few years in the area and discovered this Geological strangeness.

Lost of arguments have gone back and forth since that time with different scientists,

Some Dutch guys said it was very unlikely to cause a Mega tsunami, however as was shown on the original Horizon programme I do still respect the work carried out by the Engineers and Oceanographers of I believe from memory Sweden who use water tanks and recreated that mass of rock hitting the water as it would in a massive collapse.

What many others have stated since then is that when Krakatoa blew up, and is still known as the loudest noise in recorded history, the sound wave travelling around the earth 3 times at leat and affecting Crops and weather around the world for years.... well when that happened Local devastation from a tsunami was experienced but not on the scale that Dr Simon Day Postulates.

However following on from the Tsunami in Bander Aceh where also in a seperate continent Africa and especially in Somalia the Tidal Wave reached there and also killed many wiping out coastal villages, it is not beyound the imagination to think even a 10 Tidal ft wave hitting New Yor and the West Coast of America would have a greater impact on life.

It would not though be as Bad as the MEGA 100ft type event that Dr Simon Day first postulated from his research.

So it has been Hyped sure, It will probably happen, though not for around 10,000 years, unless like I pointed out something else triggers or feeds into such an event.

Having said that as with all these things, the Atlantic depth just of La Palma is very deep and this event is differant as the displacement would cause the wave to be propogated first from the surface, and there is the possibilty unlike in an earthquake event like in Asia 2004, that hundreds of millions of Gallons of water would be vaporised immediately if a large eruption was also taking place, adding to the initial energy and expansion and resultant contraction caused by the displacement from the falling mass of rock/island of the mass of the sea there.

In addition its a Timing thing, if it all fell in very quickly, was a high tide in the USA and a very large portion of magma was exposed to the incoming water the conditions could be right for an extreme event to take place, like the Perfect Storm.

If though it slid slowly over a day or two in an eruption it may only have very very localised effects.

It seems though that the Krakotoa argument is one to consider, but again that was an volcano blowing its top, and not actually such a large mass of rock hitting the sea at once in one area, the krakatoa rock was generally spread up and outwards for a large area.... so im unsure really.

So just for clarity adding what ive read in the scientific journals and my own opinions.

Dont be scared this is unlikely to happen as i said first of all for at least 10,000 years at current growth of the island.

If it does it will be bad but probably not as bad as first thought.

In addition a convergence of different factors would have to come together at once to make it a truly Massive event.

Kind Regards,

Elf.

There was a very interesting documentary made about this, it was a few years ago and I think it was the BBC.

If I remember correctly there will be no warning when this thing goes at it has a lot to do with water build up within the volcano.

Anyone remember this ?
