Martin, There is no state called New England. Homer, I am at a loss at your view of theElectoral College... How does Montana get a larger say in electing the Pesident than it would otherwise? Montana (and other states of similar size) have little say at all, because they are...well...small. And that is how it should be. If your voice isn't heard in California as a Republican, then is it somehow better heard as a Democrat in Montana? The Electoral College is set up on a populational proportion...the larger the state, the more electoral votes they get. More Democrats tend to gravitate towards NY, CA, and other larger cities like that, so a Democratic voice is going to be stronger. I think you are mistaking the Senate with the Electoral College. The Senate is where small states like SC and MT are given equal say. The Electoral College is a Federalist doctrine where each candidate needs to win each state on his own. However, there is no extra status or equal power given in the Electoral College system and it wasn't designed to give it.

John McCain as Sec of Defense...seems like I heard someone else say that not too long ago. I wonder who it was? I think Martin knows!

Great Show Guys... As for the Electoral College, I thank God it's there or people like me in small states would have no reason to vote. Keep up the good work..

Electoral College in words far greater than mine. Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers: It was equally desirable, that the immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice. A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations. It was also peculiarly desirable to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This evil was not least to be dreaded in the election of a magistrate, who was to have so important an agency in the administration of the government as the President of the United States. But the precautions which have been so happily concerted in the system under consideration, promise an effectual security against this mischief. Multied Article II of the Constitution lists the specifics of the Electoral College. The Founding Fathers included the Electoral College as one of the famous "checks and balances" for two reasons: 1) to give states with small populations more of an equal weight in the presidential election and 2) they didn't trust the common man (Remember, women couldn't vote then.) to be able to make an informed decision on which candidate would make the best president.
