Hate groups believe assassinating Barack Obama can match the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre, an expert in political terrorism says

Grim fears about the safety of America's first black president-elect continue to build, with the country's most reviled racist group the Ku Klux Klan warning of a "race war" after Obama's election yesterday.

Any US president is a target of assassination. The KKK is a joke and pretty much discredited in 99% of the country. Thier nationwide membership is about 10,000 folks mostly poor , broke, and incompetent.
Sure they could be a threat but I pretty much think the Secret Service and Homeland Security can handle them pretty easily unless the intend to use them as patsies like Oswald was. That being said all it takes is for one nutjob to get lucky.

I agree the klan has been pretty much discredited, but there are other groups out there that are much better organized and just might be intelligent enough to pull this off. The Aryan Nation comes to mind, along with other hate groups.
While I did not vote for Obama because I disagree with what little I have been able to discern about his policies, I do not want to see the man assasinated. I, like many others on this board, lived through the national tragedy of the Kennedy assasination. I have no desire to go through something like that. I do not want this country to go through that again. And I do not want his wife and children to suffer that loss. The secret service will probably have to beef up their coverage.

Personally, I am most afraid of the right wing, religious, domestic terrorists created by the rhetoric of the McCain/Palin campaign. What scares me the most is these people would actually believe they were doing God's work in eliminating the "Anti-Christ" or a "terrorist." You guys know who I am talking about as many of them have graced ATS with their presence. I can only hope that their comments have been noted by the appropriate authorities.

Lets all pray that our government does everything in its power to protect Obama from the many nut jobs who would want to harm him.

These right wing freaks are nothing more than a bad example of what America is capable of.

If Obama was assassinated then it would destroy what little respect I have for America and ultimately it would have been the 'last chance' for the US to redeem themselves...

If something as simple as having a black President causes them all to lose their minds, then they deserve the chaos that they will ultimately bring upon themselves.

Maybe the rest of the world, should start looking at other super powers, because America seems to be the most childish and backwards one at the moment.

Such a shame, becuase a step towards socialism would have been great for them, just a pity they are too blind to see it.

Its pretty sad isn't it, I have to agree though, if something like this did happen, I think it would cause so much distress, and not only for America, but around the Planet.

Its time these groups were put to sleep if you ask me, they do nothing to help anyone but their own egotistical tiny minds, half the stuff they believe in is a load of BS anyhow.

Sad truth is, if someone is determined enough, then they will get through whatever security is in place, and it would only take one sympathizer on the inside to leave a gap.

Even those who didn't vote or support him, need to condemn these people, just to show they accept that the due process of the USA, and accept that it is the way it is, and allow the choice of the American people to do his job, I doubt the threat would come from outside the US on this one, to many voices around the world wanting to be heard, so will give it a chance, it seems this time the threat really is coming from within, and that is IMO one of the problems the US Government needs to squash and eliminate.

And I agree with the OP most of them are severely lacking in the brain department.

I don't like Obama at all. I do pray though he isn't assassinated though. If that happened he would be compared to Martin Luther King JR and that would be the true travesty.

The ramifications of an assassination of President Obama would be so far reaching it boggles the mind.

First and foremost, it would send a clear signal to US citizens and the world that despite the US contention that they have the technology, infrastructure and resources to pretty much do anything globally on a military scale, they cannot protect their leader.

That would send things into a wobble internationally.

Tied in to that and within our borders, it would touch off racial tensions and a lack of confidence in our protective efforts in that it would clearly appear that the PTB were either unwilling or unable to protect the president predominantly because of race.

Further, it would be saying to the US citizens and the world that despite the everpresent political mantra of 'democracy for all', those who pull the strings don't give a hangin' chad about that process within our borders as it would appear that they, again, were unwilling to dedicate the rescources necessary to protect the person that was duly elected.

In other words, you voted him in . . . we don't like that . . . now he's dead.

I shudder at the ramifications.

I don't see any of the more extreme white nationalist groups wanting to assassinate him. Truth is the prevailing attitude is "let it run its course and prove our point".

Though I could see OTHER powers that want to cause massive civil unrest, and drive America deeper into the pit of despair having a motive, they can just blame it on Iran or the KKK after the fact.

Look at the comments in this thread, if something happened plenty would be all about blaming the KKK even if they had nothing to do with it! Truth is radical black groups would have motives too, if they want to start a race war that would be a good start. Don't assume only "evil whites" are capable of radical, nutty philosophies.

JD he has already achieved Martin Luther King Jr. status. It's a very small list, King, the Peanut Butter guy, and now Obama. He will be talked about constantly for generations. [SNIP]

Obama is now a demi-god in that respect. Now and forever.

well...abraham lincoln and barack obama are both tall and lanky, both came from illinois, both have 5 syllables combined in their first and last names, both have to deal with the outcomes of a war, coincidences????

What an awful thing to say. I imagine that most Americans would be pretty traumatized if this happened. How could you then blame them for it?

Yes.

If you look hard enough you can draw "coincidental" links between any two people on the planet. The trick to making it sound plausible is to not mention the hundreds of thousands of things that they don't have in common.

Ever since I was young I have been hearing this same BS about a "race war." This fictional race war has been used by many loony right wingers and racists to justify everything from stockpiling of assault weapons to the creation of the projects and gated communities. Look, this is NEVER going to happen. For one, why would a minority group with relatively few resources wish to go to war against a majority with arguably limitless resources? Secondly, if things have changed in America so much that a minority can become president, what motivation would they have for starting a race war? Essentially, this is a fictional fantasy propagated by right wing extremist groups to justify their existence and purpose. Stop believing it.

I will give you that some government or Illuminati conspiracy could be responsible for the harm of Obama but, come on, no African American will, under any stretch of the imagination, be the one pulling the trigger.

Oh I don’t think it will be a true “war” either. They only make up 13% of the population so any sort of real war would be out of the question. However do not underestimate the power of massive riots and random killings. That would cause a lot of distress, cost a lot of money, and definitely make things “worse” in a heartbeat.

You think there is no way he could be assassinated by blacks? Well realistically, yes it would be quite difficult to do so you are probably right, but not for lack of trying. Malcolm X was assassinated by blacks if you recall. As I said, there are radical black groups with an agenda as well, and if you think it is impossible for radical types to decide Obama is not really on their side, and perhaps Obama could serve the black community better by being a sacrifice that wakes “blacks up”.

Side note…

Did you know last week, on Halloween there were THOUSANDS of volunteers in Detroit on the streets to prevent arson? Yup, every Halloween it is customary in black Detroit neighborhoods to torch abandoned buildings, hundreds of them. It’s a tradition, setting buildings on fire is sort of like carving pumpkins! But of course it is the fault of those abandoned buildings, if there weren’t sitting there tempting people to set them on fire this wouldn’t happen. They do it for FUN every year. Wonder what would happen if they had a reason beyond fun?

At its peak in 1984, 810 fires were reported in Detroit from Oct. 29 to 31, fueled by, among other things, Devil's Night's growing notoriety and the city's large number of abandoned buildings. But the number of blazes has dropped — 147 fires were reported last year for the three days ending Oct. 31, up from the 113 reported in 2006 and 121 in 2005
