That is the question..

I have some family movies that I took with a video recorder that uses the old Mini VHS tape..

I transfered them to my PC some time ago and watched them a few times.

Now however, when I click on them, the only program that will even get close to opening them, is "Quicktime" and I only get the audio then...

Anyone have any idea what may have happened?

I have already downloaded all my codecs, so I should be up to date..

The troubling thing is that they used to play just fine..

Any help would be appreciated..

Hi semper. Sounds like your codecs have got in a pickle somehow, that can be tricky to fix.

I tend to use a couple of free software programs to watch videos, I find they just work with far more video types that the Windows Media Player, you could try those.

You also have the option of using "system restore" if you are using Windows. This might fix things up to where they work again.

Just go back to a time when things were working.

This is if Windows will let you go back. I have found Windows to strangely not restore itself on some occasions. Just an option you could consider. This will uninstall programs that you have installed after that restore point, but it is not supposed to delete your files.

GOM software

Free, Simple, Light, It just plays!

GOM Media Player, GOM Encoder

it's free and does a fairly good job..has it's own built in video decoders for movies.
incase you don't know what codec you need.
works wonders

so try that video player it should play it for you..
