So. After much anticpation, mr obama is jubilantly elected the commander in chief of the most powerful nation on earth.

Yet its not celebration everywhere.
Obviously in a nation of 300 million your not gonna get universal argeement on anything.

But to those who are so quick cry "Socialist!" , or proclaim the absolute death of the American dream, ive got to ask, whats the worry?

Since when has any politician of any genre ever changed, fundamentally, the way in which you live? A more expensive tank of gas here, a refused conservatory extension because of planning laws there. All Obama, McCain, Clinton, Bush, etc. can do is tinker with a huge, cumbersome and inflexible political-economic system. As democratic as we in the west like to think we are, we are still utterly disemfranchised. All we need to survive is originally owned by someone else. Most of us do not produce our own food, make our own clothes or build our own houses. We are stuck with a system built on boom and bust, produces things not because we need them, but to be sold for a profit.

We do not decide who stands for office, and we cannot recall them once they are there. What does "office" even mean anyway? When does the power for change these people wield ever trickle down from that rarified atmosphere to make any profound difference to our lives?
Politics becomes a slanging match, with its practioners slinging mud and playing top-trumps with the same generic "policys". Fixing anything is like building a lego brick house wearing boxing gloves.

I just find it a little odd how some Americans, when asked why obama would be such a threat to their way of life, imediatley yelp " hes a gawdam socialist!". How did the word "socialist" become synonomus with "evil" and "threat"?

Basically im asking, whatever Obama does, hes going to have people who stand against him. But to those who say how disastrous Barrack`s presidency would be, what are your reasons? Realistically, behind all the kneejerk ideologicalism, why do you think hes going to be any different to anyone else?

i remember when bliar became pm here in the uk, "things can only get better" was played over and over! then look what happened...
is it going to be any different in the usa? i doubt it, theres probably too many of the old guard pulling strings somewhere...

Probably not. But what it will do is sweep the current crop of theives and miscreants out of Washington and disrupt business-as-usual for awhile. That same political fungi will attach itself to the new incoming people but it will take a little while. Maybe, just maybe we'll catch a break in the interim. It will at least slow the handbasket down for a short while.

If you renovate an old, run-down house with a few cans of paint, some new furniture and make the lawn all pretty, all you've done is make it look nice for prospective buyers.

But, once they check out the crumbling foundation, the out-of-date wiring, and leaky plumbing, those potential buyers move on to something more structurally sound.

The US is that old, run-down house. Obama and his minions are the paint and new furniture. Unfortunately the system through which the US runs is fraught with a crumbling foundation, out-of-date wiring and leaky plumbing.

Is it realistic that Obama can quickly rebuild that foundation, change the wiring and fix the leaky plumbing such that the 'buyers' in our economy don't look elsewhere?

No because as a country, we cannot afford the necessary renovations to our system.

Unfortunately, it has to collapse first and then the rebuilding can commence.

That's why it was my opinion from the day the Republican ticket was announced that they were in no way interested in winning this election. Even though they're culpable in this mess, the headlines and history books will note first that the Democrats were in power when everything fell apart. The Republicans' part in this will be burried in the text.

In our headline skimming society, the Democrats will get the blame.

So, yeah I think it is going to change but unfortunately it will be for the worse before it gets better.
