Anyway, these stats are about equal to regular US society stats. What is the story again?

Haha , thanks.

Yeah it's clear that rape is more than just a sexual urge. But it still is a combination of that, wanting power, some sort of mental illness. A normal person doesnt just go decide to rape someone.

I know first hand. I'm a woman.. you think I havent almost been raped? There are people out there that dont understand boundaries, and that have no self control.

So for people saying rape has nothing to do with sexual urges, thats baloney. Its not just that, but it definitely is a part of it.

Of course women are going to get raped. These men are stuck over there for months, or years at a time with no contact with women.. if one comes in site, you better believe they are going to rape her.

What a disgusting attitude.
And what of the men who are raped and sexually abused by other men in the armed forces?? There is women around so why don't they attack them instead??

ATS4dummies

To be brutally honest, sorry, it does come fom being horney.

This is wrong.
Rape is an act of violence. It is fueled by lust,a lust to harm,to degrade,to control,to instill fear.Being horny has sod all to do with it.

Sonya610

I don't know, I do believe rapes occur, absolutely. But the bit about women not drinking and dying of dehydration sounds too odd. Maybe those women had mental health issues or something that caused the behavior.

The only mental problems they have is the fear of being raped.

I simply cannot believe they were incapable of finding other female soldiers, or sympathetic male soldiers that would walk with them to the bathrooms at night.

If you read the articles properly you will see that commanding officers told women not to go to the bathroom alone. But there will always be times when you can't find someone to do that.Just like people who have to walk home alone at night through a rough neighbourhood, they can't always get a friend to walk with them.

Plus sheesh they could have peed in a cup if it came down to it. Surely they knew that lack of water would kill them far faster than anything else.

Women do.But the water isn't on tap,it comes from a supply tent. This makes it easier for pills to be put into the water.

It's clearly not a real news item.

Spurred by the rising number of women speaking out, Air Force Secretary John Roche made a rare visit to the school last week to address 2,000 cadets, warning that he would "not tolerate" rapists or a culture that accepted sexual harassment at the academy. "There are now many questions about the character of all Air Force Academy cadets and recent graduates due to reported sexual assaults — clearly criminal acts — by a dangerous minority."

Nearly 12 percent of the women who graduated from the United States Air Force Academy this year were the victims of rape or attempted rape in their four years at the academy in Colorado Springs, with the vast majority never reporting the incidents to the authorities, according to a survey by the inspector general of the Defense Department.

From the Dept. of Justice... and if you're inclined to search, any and every reliable source of information of the subject will say the same.

Rape Myths

Despite the prevalence of sexual assault in the United States, a number of misconceptions surround this crime and its victims. Some of the most common myths include:

1. Rape is a crime of passion.

The notion that the rapist is controlled by overwhelming lust is far removed from the reality. Psychologists have found that the motivation behind sexual assault is most often the need to dominate and control, rather than the inability to control sexual urges. Rape is primarily an act of power and aggression....

www.ojp.usdoj.gov...

There is nothing sexual about rape. It is about power. Period. And for the record, men are responsible for their behavior-- not women.

So men are entirely responsible for their behaviour right?

I hate to be so crass, bass and lude, but what about these young girls that go out to clubs and bars every weekend dressed in nothing but a bra and knickers (or what looks like said brasserie)? Do you think that 'putting it all on display' says to a mans psyche "behave"? Do you really think that having everything available like that encourages men to act more appropriately?

I completely agree that rape is a crime of violence, and that it is fuelled by a need to dominate and instill fear, but get real!

Women sometimes, and often encourage men to commit these dreadful acts by the way they dress, the language they use and even the body language... ever heard the expression "cock tease"???

Just for clarity, any man that commits rape should expect to be sent to a penal colony. Although it is a shame that in our enlightened society we have done away with such things, and now keep these scumbags in prison for a couple of years only before releasing them back into society... how very intelligent!!!

Apparently you could use a few more face to face encounters with our military. You brazenly stereotype them all in a very childish attempt to degrade them. It seems someone got their butt kicked at some point.

Further, your quotes on the cause of rape clearly state "experts believe" and similar, that sounds like opinion to me an nothing based upon fact. Women in Iraq are not being raped by men who want to dominate them, they are being raped by men who want sex.

Whilst I agree that you have a 'smoking hot avatar', you have to remember that there are teenage boys on here, and their parents will not be entirely enthused at the idea of sticky keyboards in the morning...

Your photographer certainly takes some good shots though!

Back to topic,

I am still stunned at the lack of understanding some of these posts are showing...

While the conversation about the nature of rape is interesting, I'd still like to know why it is that deployed US troops having the same statistical instances of rape as normal US society is noteworthy.

Can someone fill me in?

I hate this excuse, and thats all it is.
There are places in the world where,in the summer months, women walk around in bikini's every single day,are they guilty of teasing men??

And what about countries where women are covered head to toe, they still get raped.Women in the western world of the 18th century (and before) were raped, even though they had nothing on display.

If a man sees a woman as a tease and decides to do something about it,he isn't horny. He wants what he can't have,so he takes by force. He dominates the woman, puts her in her place, teaches her a lesson etc etc.

Such an attitude makes it very difficult for women in court because all a man has to say is,'well, she was a cock tease so i thought it only right that a drag her in a dark alley and brutally rape and sodomize her.'

I don't hold with any form of mistreatment of women, especially rape.

However, at the risk of sounding like a narrow-minded male jerk, I don't think that females should be operating as they do in combat influenced areas.

We need female doctors, nurses, intelligence analysts, communications specialists, administrative officers and such, but this female thing has gone too far. The very presence of females in a combat zone not only complicate operations, but compound a number of potential trouble areas.

When captured, how does one think they'll be treated? When captured, how much of a leverage point will these women prisoners give their captors to use against other decent, male prisoners?

If I get wounded, is sugar-pants going to have the upper body strength to haul my ass and weapon to safety? If I'm holding the rear, and she has to pull herself and gear up a rope, will she have the upper body strength to get it on over the wall so I can start climbing?

Again, there is no excuse for any mistreatment of women, and especially rape. But the fact is that the military is not a social experiment, and women should not be in the combat zone to begin with.

I know, I know. You can all smoke me now.

My attitude is SO not disgusting. I am a woman. I know FIRST HAND what some men are capable of, and how they can act. Im pretty positive you have never experienced a man trying to rape you. Correct?

I think this is the first time i've ever agreed with something you have said.
Guess under that dog killing apelike exterior of yours you do have some common sense after all.

I've always said that if women cannot do the things a man can do in the military, strength or endurance wise they she shouldn't be there.(the same goes for any man who can't either)

And,as much as i am for equality, this statement is true.

The very presence of females in a combat zone not only complicate operations, but compound a number of potential trouble areas.

Look at some of these sources.
They cant be trusted. They are pure anti Iraq war.
I can find no figures on this.
Im sure it happens im sure everything that happens in civilian life also happens at some stage in the military during deployments.
Rape murder theft etc.
However to the scale these sources are talking I think is going overboard.
If you put hundreds of thousands of men and women together.
You have to expect like back in the world some bad things will happen.
You might get a person, who is a really great soldier.
But a crappy lousy person. This is the luck of the draw somewhat.
Why do you think they have criminal courts in the military.
Because they expect there to be some crime.
Human beings aren't perfect.

Rape is about control, a violent act usually against women
and has very little to do with sexual desire. Some rapists
get horny even thinking about forcing someone to submit
so the actual sex is more of a side affect, it's an act
designed to conquer and humiliate the victim. IMO

The worst part is that it happens in the military..

Yes it is stressfull fighting war and I'm sure that
pushes soldiers who wouldn't normally do that "over the edge"

That said these are still US soldiers who are supposed
to uphold a high level of disipline no matter what.

Rape is about the worst crime that can be commited and should
be punished even more severly when done by those in the military.

How many of the reported rapes were actually substantiated? What other evidence was present aside from the woman saying "I was raped."

I'm not unsympathetic to rape victims, but let's not forget that sometimes people lie. Perhaps sex occurred after a night of drinking. Perhaps no alcohol was involved.

It seems that you people are more apt to attack soldiers than actually debate the merits of the rape allegations. Obviously this post accomplished what it was designed to do: portray the troops negatively and let you anti-military folks have something else to whine about.

Since we always claim to be so unbiased in these forums, let's look at this with out bias. Let's remember that some people perceive events differently than others may. What is sexual advances to one woman is nothing more than innocent flirting to another.

This is not a man v. woman issue. This is a result of the radical feminization of our society. Women have been empowered and men have been castrated.

Next time a woman is raped, thank the feminists.

Please, some force needs to quickly remove the Bush administration, this is very terrible, these female patriotic solders who give their loyalty only to be betrayed, belittled, and abused.

You Aint Seen Nothing Yet! Wait until Obama gets into Office and raises the bar of what is considered evil!

Very sad story, although I'm a little suspicious about some of the facts. Unfortunately as human beings or any other species for that matter, we are all driven by our own motives, ethics and are all responsible for our own behaviour.

To the poster who said they can understand it happens because the male soldiers are horny - are you having laugh? As any other male or female I have the desire/need for sex but that doesnt result in me raping the nearest girl I see, whatever the conditions!

Sex would probably be the last thing on my mind in a war zone type situation.

I have to say though, as people have said the story itself does sound a little dodgy. I'm pretty sure that if a female soldier did get raped then the male soldiers that found out would have the attackers "guts for garters"

LOL..and I suppose you believe that the female soldiers on base are walking around in frilly bras and nickers late at night to tempt male soldiers?

Have you SEEN the female soldiers? They look just like the guys but smaller, same uniforms, and there is surely "nothing" seductive about the uniforms (well not in a frilly way at least).

I don't condone these actions in any way or blame the women, but I do have to say that this isn't a place a women belongs. I don't agree with women on the front lines or as police officers on the beat, etc.

Fact is men are the physically dominant species since the beginning of time and regardless of what people think, women shouldn't be fighting wars. This is that womens lib equal rights crap they been fighting for and look at the situation it put them in.If a woman is in the services it should be behind a desk using their inteligence, not braun.

Also look at what a bunch of pathetic super dweebs this country is breeding. All of the computer savy physically inferior men.Society is undoing what tooks centuries to evolve and is reversing the roles of nature.

We all have our places in life.

It's noteworthy because we're all the "big bad soldiers that are going to hurt the wittle americans when we get back from hurting the wittle Iwaqis.... boo hoo hoo."

These people need to grow the hell up.

You take the trash off the street and put it into our Army and OF COURSE we're going to have rapes.

"Liquid" is a fool. I don't know who he met or really care to discusss the issue, but to ANYONE on here who thinks we're all pyschotic or there's something "mentally" wrong with us is blind. What's even more disgusting is the number of stars that his drivel received.

I can look some articles up online too and make an outstanding claim about massive cover-ups and lies, but you know what - none of you people are "in the military", so don't go blathering about how bad we all are.

You should be so lucky the few of us who volunteered to do this solely because ... oh - I don't know? I like my country???? Did.

And before I get this title again . . . "I'M NOT A RAPE APOLOGIST. RAPE IS A CRIME - IT IS BAD - WE ALL DO NOT DO IT..." - Barney terms for you, so there's no confusion.
