I don't think so. The formation of contrails is a more a function of the atmospheric conditions at the altitude they are flying than the operation of the engines.

I admit I am speculating a bit as well.

If they were geuine chemtrails I'd imagine there would be some sort of flow control, but I'm leaning towards the jet theory.

I was thinking for instance of the Mythbusters episodes where they showed a jet engine blowing a taxi cab end over end, and wondering if, even from a small fighter, that would have any effect on any plane behind it.

To give you an idea:
A single engine (one of 4) of a 747 produces a maximum thrust of 62,100 pounds.
An F-16 can produce 14,950 lbs. With afterburner it produces 23,770 lbs.

That is still a lot of thrust to be sitting behind, even from a fighter.

I would not pass up the chance for a ride!

I've never had the chance for a ride but I've seen several fighters and bombers up close and personal on the ground. It is certainly impressive!

Um. No. They cannot turn off the exhaust without shutting down the engine(s).

[edit on 1-11-2008 by Phage]

Uhm yes, they can. The F-22 has a contrail suppression system on it. Otherwise what's the point of being stealth if you're leaving a 20 mile contrail behind you.

One solution would be to avoid altitudes at which contrails occur but I've never heard of suppression system. Can you tell me more about it?

A single engine (one of 4) of a 747 produces a maximum thrust of 62,100 pounds.

Boeing 747-100:
P&W JT9D-7A - 46,500lbs
Rolls Royce RB211-524B2 - 50,100lbs
GE C6-45A2 - 46,500lbs

747-200:
P&W JT9D-7R4G2 - 54,750lbs
Rolls Royce RB211-534D2 - 53,000lbs
GE C6-50E2 - 52,500lbs

747-300:
P&W JT9D-7R4G2 - 54,750lbs
Rolls Royce RB211-524D4 - 53,000lbs
GE C6-80C2B1 - 55,640lbs

747-400:
P&W PW4062 - 63,300lbs
Rolls Royce RB211-524H2-T - 59,500lbs
GE C6-80C2B5F - 62,100lbs

To compare-
F-15:
P&W F100-PW-220 or 229 - 14,590lbs mil 23,770 ab

F-16:
Pratt &Whitney F100-PW-100 or -220 turbofan - 23,800lbs
General Electric F110-GE-100 turbofan - 28,900lbs

F-22:
P&W F-119-PW-100 - 37,000lbs

F-35:
P&W F-135 - 40,000lbs
GE/Rolls Royce F-136 - 40-43,000lbs

Just throwing some numbers out there, not really a point just interesting to see the difference in thrust ratings. The biggest reason fighters can get away with less thrust is they don't have to carry as much. The F-15 has a max take-off weight of around 48,000lbs for the A/B. That gave it a 1.04-1 thrust to weight rating.

Not a lot is known about them. The B-2 injects something into the exhaust that keeps contrails from forming. I'm assuming that the F-22 does something similar, unless they've come up with something new. I know Lockheed's Polecat used sensors to tell if it was going to be in the range for them to form, but some planes perform best in the altitudes where they form, so they CAN'T really avoid them.

The picture falls out like this :

The two farther back are at lower altitudes. I'd say10 and 15 thousand feet(left and right). Their angles say they will cross somewhat in the distance.

Of the lower 3 in the picture, the one on the right is highest ,the middle one is below it 5 thousand feet and the one on the left is lower still.

The plane on the right will soon cross the path of the middle plane and then the one on the left. The plane in the middle will also cross the path of the plane on the left.

All planes in the picture are flying at different altitudes.

FAA rules must be followed at all times.

Theres nothing at all wierd about this. Its normal.
Stop being paranoid.

Thanks for your imput but I was able to watch these trails for quite some time, an they never did cross.

Parts of the largest Piece of trash ever jettisoned from the International Space Station are expected to crash to earth sometime later tomorrow, NASA officials said.

While most of the refrigerator-sized, 1,400-pound tank of toxic ammonia coolant will burn up as it enters the Earth's atmosphere, officials said as many 15 pieces of the tank may survive - ranging anywhere from 1.4 ounces to 40 pounds. If the pieces were to make it to the earth's surface, they could slam to the ground at about 100 miles per hour.

It is unknown where the debris will land, but the chances it might land in a populated area are slim. Most likely, it would plunge into the sea.

I've got no idea whether the pieces of this could look like what you saw, but the timing is about right.

What do you think?

classic modern day formation of 5 fighters heading into hostile skys....on an enemys plane the radar will pick up only 3 planes and when the fight begins the 2 others suddenly appear and pounce on the enemy that now totals 5 craft instead of 3, suprise...
