I just read something I thought was pretty neat in the March 2004 Scientific American.

The Pentagon's R&D department (many of you know it as DARPA) is going to release an experimental new technology into the war in Iraq. It's a laser tracking system which uses dopler effect to track where a sniper's bullet came from. Granted, the sniper still gets the shot off, but without the pseudo-guarentee that they'll make it home again.

Has anyone else heard about this? The article didn't say what the time frame was for setting up the laser, but it didn't sound like you needed it already set up to tell where the bullet came from. The laser would read dust particle movements and calculate the trajectory after the fact. Edumicate me on this, it I'm wrong!

sounds pretty advanced. if its real, it could be pretty handy in urban combat.

Or maybe if they just invented the bullet time device? eh?

Yeah Ive seen what your talking about before they were showing the shot trails getting traced in real time pretty amazing stuff. Its going to be great for defending bases and such from snipers

IF it worls. Prototype units rushed to the field are notoriously unreliable.

I was talking to an ex-sniper for the army about it.

He said the first thing the sniper would do would be to shoot out the box on the top of the vehicle that contains the sensor.....
