dude, are you kidding me..."law will never keep up with technology" hows that? youtube and google already censors many things without censorship laws in place. in places like china the internet is controled by the government and they are only allowed to see what their government wants them to see, no way around it. we cant afford to let any form of censorship laws to pass....if this happens were screwed...we will only hear the opinions of what the govenment wants us to hear, after they find a way to censor free speech this country is dead and there is no way we will be able to fix it.

IMO the internet will not slow down as theres too much money tied up in that.
However i think we will see it governed and we wont even notice it at first. It will be the odd site disappearing here and there until it is too late. They could even be doing that now - youtube accounts disappearing anyone?

I'm all for freedom of speech and free flow of information / ideas etc. But I must ask (just for the sake of discussion), are there any positive aspects to internet 2?

Note, I'm against censorship in the broad sense. But some things like illegal porn needs to go...

illegal porn is allready illegal and the feds take down all sites and make thousands of arrests. all internet 2 will do is censor sites and users that have disenting opinions about government policy....that is the only reason for internet 2....you belive what the government tells you and tells you to do and thats end of story

Yeah there are many things that are illegal, but they still exist. Imagine (if you will), you're surfing and you stumble on a site that has illegal content. Next thing you know the feds are busting down your door...

I hate that the Australian government can do this, and there is nothing we can do to stop it. They seem to truly have there minds set on this.

I too, as others have stated, will definitely cancel my account should this censorship be implemented, and should that not work, a micro nation might be the way to go, lol I mean this guy pulled it off

Well IF what you say is true then I completely agree.

I just (as with all good discussions) want to see all sides of the story.

How so? From the same source..

Molossian Postal and Telegraph Service only functions within the Republic of Molossia since the micronation is unrecognized and therefore has no equivalent agencies outside it. The Postal and Telegraph Service currently produces stamps

This bit gave me a chuckle

Several items are banned in Molossia, including firearms, incandescent light bulbs, catfish, onions, walruses and anything from Texas, except Kelly Clarkson

The micro nation idea was meant in jest, but short of leaving this country I feel this impending Internet 2 concept is unavoidable.

I'm sure that soon we shall see the endless propaganda supporting this concept filling the media, and the people who trust the government with blind faith shall welcome it with open arms. It will truly be a dark day for free speech.

I had a feeling you might of been jesting, but wasn't completely sure, am now though

Yeah this does worry me but short of canceling my net subscription there's not much we can do. We all know that protesting gets us nowhere, sadly...

My guess is there will be underground nets but no doubt anyone found in there will be considerd a criminal...

Man this sux.

You realize the first internet, was people dialing up each others pc's?
It is so easy to make a wireless hotpot in your home.
People could make there own private networks huge in a matter of months from pc to pc relay.
They can never completely control the internet they simply cant do it.

Thats what i was going to say, go back to BBS's it worked before, Ran a few my self..
There is still the older software out there.. but with a large enough group i'm sure we have a few programers on here.. that could taylor software to fit what we need.. ship packets computer to computer within a day it reaches the other side of the world, and works on its way back.

A little slower but still would have free speech

Could the government do what they did to the public by forcing them to change over to Digital T.V. and use some concocked change over to super broadband or some phoney baloney story for the internet?

The government could also change over to internet 2 to track and tax every transaction. This is a huge untapped source of income for the Socialistic government we are living under.

What ever happened to that free internet filter the Howard Government put out here in Australia?

The fact we don't hear much of it now. I guess its safe to assume it has failed, so now instead of offering it for free, there going to force it upon us. I'm truly going to miss these forums cause I have a sneaking suspicion it will be one of the first to go.

I can't find the link at this moment, but an article I read a couple of days ago said that the internet as we know it isn't going anywhere, but it will be sort of the bad neighborhood compared to internet 2, which will be far better regulated and for good reason.

Anyone with a PC should be well versed in the problems inherent in the current system.

Right now, critical social and national security infrastructure are hooked up to the internet as we now know it and is highly vulnerable at all times.

This new internet will offer security at the cost of some freedoms, but those who will be interested in this arrangement will be more than willing to accept the trade-off.

There needs to be a new internet so that these high-value, highly vulnerable processes can function securely.

Here's some other links.

www.internet2.edu...

www.slate.com...

This is the link I was looking for.
