Just guessing, but from the article below it stands to reason that Iraqi Forces got some intel on the location and maybe asked the U.S. to act on it to help end the insurgency in the Mosul area.

Secondly, they are one of the few Democratic countries in the region and that must be propagated.

Yesterday I privately noted that Gen. Petraeus was giving Syria high marks just a few months ago for its cooperation reducing the influx of foreign fighters into Iraq.

There were a lot of articles mentioning how the influx from Syria was down from 100 to just 20 a month.

Several articles quote the Syrian Foreign Minister saying the U.S. knows that Syria has been tightening their border with Iraq.

The U.S. Secretary of State discussed the issue with the Syrian ambassador less than 30 days ago.

I also read two separate articles with eyewitnesses complaining that the Syrian military was just down the road and did nothing.

These little details started giving me the idea that, (despite all the crying to the media and the U.N), Syria covertly approved the raid. They just couldn't let the rest of the world know that, for "whatever" reason. It just seems to fit the puzzle pieces.

Somebody agrees with me.

Mr Bergman told Sky News the raid happened after America had lobbied Syria intensely to deal with an al Qaeda group conducting activity on the border.

What is interesting is that US forces usually prefer night time to conduct such raids. Must have been a time sensitive target.
