Understanding string theory.

I've never really understood string theory,it's not that it baffles me,it's just i've never read anything about it before. Just heard the term. So,with that in mind,could someone prep my brain for this little stint of videos. I found this nice little site, ( www.pbs.org... )with a 3 hour video,broken up into chapters by the looks of it. The link I followed to find this site,said that it's nicely put so it's not confusing. Which sounds right up my street

but before I dive in to the quantum abyss,I'd like a little knowlage first.

So,can anyone break string theory down into something tangable for the non quantum mind?

I have seen this doco before.
