Australia to censor internet for all users

Well here's one other fellow Aussie who agrees whole-heartedly with you!

Censor MY internet experience - bulls@#t!! They have NO RIGHT to tell what i can and can't look at.

Child porn is one thing we will all agree on, but using it as a scapegoat to implement increasing censorship - what a joke!

Kevin Rudd (our prime minister) is behind this and i can't help but feel we are the test subjects for the rest of the modern world - let's see what happens in Oz and then adapt our plan... hmmmmm


Many of us know what is coming so let's hope we can stop of machine from turning....

relish and enjoy these days of the "early internet" folks, because someday you'll look back in fond memory of a wide open free frontier that once was...

almost makes one want to take screen shots of all the sites you cherish, just to show youngsters the way it used to be.

BUT the world is full of bright people and i could see black nets popping up that are totally user set and funded and built. at least i'm hoping so... like the very early internet that was developed by scientists. a way to share info amongst each other.

agreeing with above poster, i'm not so surprised with china, but aussie? wow...

I am setting up a meeting with Tony Abbott to discuss this matter. I want some answers and I will report them on the site when I have more info.

This needs to be stopped now while it is still in evaluation phase.

More people need to contact their local parliamentary candidate and let them know that they we are aware of what hey are trying to do.

Wake up sheeple, your world is being taken away from you ! Why are so many so DUMB and unaware of their very own surrounds ?

This post will stand out like a sore thumb because I think it's a good idea to censor the net. But only on the condition that people can opt-out, which I believe was the original plan.

Basically anything that's deemed illegal under Australian law should be filtered out, plus I'd include all forms of porn as well.

For those that opt-out, they are responsible for keeping minors from accessing porn and other adult only content. If they fail to be responsible, their opt out option is revoked.

Fair enough!?

Oh look, sure --- get rid of the porn, that I agree with. It makes about as much sense as people paying to watch video of other people on the toilet.
Porn is on a par with sucking your thumb and wetting your diapers.

But 'anything deemed illegal under Aussie law ' ?
that leaves them a hell of a lot of room to maneuvre, doesn't it ?
I mean, what if all US-based conspiracy sites were deemed 'illegal' ?
What if Rudd's homeland China was the only o/seas content Aussies
were 'legally' able to access ?

Instead of censoring Illegal stuff they should fight it. There's always a way around censors and its easy to move sites and services around to other domain names and physical servers.

Online Censorship only means control over the information stream for the population. Its is not just open for abuse by governments, but without exception gets abused by any and all government models on earth.

So that means torrents will go also I’m not convinced that torrents could be stopped anyone know the answer

Have you ever accessed the net from a public library? You can get ATS no problem but try any porn, hightimes or related sites and all you get is the 403. If you want that type of content then opt-out!!

I take your point, but I don't think we Aussies would stand for what the Chinese have to put up with. Remember the Chinese can't vote out their government but we can...

At the end of the day,the only people this will actually effect are the normal,law abiding citizens of Australia. All the criminal activity will now be done through a proxy. It will stop nothing. It's just another law brought in,so that other laws can be crobarred in with it.

torrents aren't illegal. I get my Linux distros using torrents.

Piracy of copyrighted material is another story. Should be possible to filter that too, don't ask me how though..

I didn't read all posts and if it has been said before, ignore me.

Many posters said they would "raise hell" and similar quotes if that happens in the U.S. Hey open your eyes, it won't be long before such censorship will be established in the U.S. (and consequently all over the world). The CIA and especially NSA are already monitoring your every email and they search for words like "bomb", "jihad" and so on. No it's not very clever to spread e-mail jokes about terrorism and stuff, especially if you are not american (as I'm not), since you can have troubles getting in the country. Yeah U.S. is really acting as a world policeman and freedom is a very relative term. Especially if you convince people that such actions are needed for "national security", freedom can be greatly compromised.

I won't say it all started with 9/11, but internet espionage definitely got a great boost because of 9/11. The control of ordinary people by authority was made really easy with wide use of internet. Think about it...

Was at work and didn't have access to the abovetopsecret websites yet, BUT because I work in IT, I have the way and the means to bypass our network security...

So that is kind of a point made in itself isn't it ?

I work at a major bank, and am not allowed on a large amount of sites, for obvious security reasons, so if i can bypass our firewall at work, what is going to stop me from bypassing the firewall our government is going to force onto all of us ?

As said before there are certain ways of getting past this, so in essence, the government will just be wasting a large amount of money on nothing, it will just be a matter of time before most of you learn how to bypass this little problem...

I am still angry, because it is still not really the whole point...how can the government decide FOR ME, telling me as a tax paying adult, living in a country with one of the highest costs of broadband in the world that I will not be allowed to visit sites they deem unfit....and I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!!

Im already paying a fortune for my internet, how much more are they going to expect me to pay, for slower internet that is filtered ?

There are petitions online that all australians who oppose this should look up and sign... I am not sure if i am allowed to provide a link to a petition site on ATS, but all you have to do is google " Petition Australian Internet Censorship " there is more than one, just look for it...sign it, and send it..

I know torrents are not illegal but some of the content is then again some is not. Its likely that some web sites could be filtered that are not in-fact a problem. It will be a devils own job to get them back again. Look I live in Aus and I don't think there is going to a problem at least not to start with. But it is the thin end of the wedge a test to see what happens.

As far a censorship on Ch9 I don't know but the other night I thought my audio had stuffed up, but it was audio blanking on certain words - no big deal just first time I had noticed.
