Not sure if this is the right place to post, but in Australia they're planning to censor the internet and filter out "illegal material" by way of compulsory ISP filters, much like what China does now. Check these sites out for more info: www.infowars.com...
nocleanfeed.com...
www.somebodythinkofthechildren.com...

edit: This is no hoax. It's in the federal budget under "Cyber Safety Plan", and they've been doing trials since early this year (report: www.acma.gov.au...) to see how feasible it would be on a large scale. It was going to be possible to opt out before but now the government has decided everyone should be restricted. Here's another link about it: www.efa.org.au...

What is the world coming to? I understand China, even though I don't agree with it, but Australia ?

I agree with the above poster. What ever happened to I am an adult and know what I want to look at online ? Where does it stop? The day will come when sites like this will be censored as well. It always starts with one little violation of our rights and it is expanded from there. This is wrong and very very bad.

I agree 100% with censoring child porn on the internet, but I think it should stop there.
I hope that if and when it becomes wide-spread that ISP's start censoring ANYTHING more than that, those ISP's go out of business.

schools and tafe and uni already use this crap in there own sub net thing i doubt this will go ahead its way to complicated to filter all sorts of data, and there's nothing stopping people from routing/tunneling data through other country's proxy servers, is it technically and economically near impossible i think this news is just someones idea gone too far, although i could be rong, if its true ill be up for a riot

HOAX

show us one peice of legislation before the HOUSE

This needs more than an EMO headline and three dubious links that only provide third party statements.

This is Australia mate and it ain't gonna happen without some serious butt kicking and then it won't happen.

now if I wanted to post 300 links that prove that ANYTHING goes (but maybe shouldn't) would that prove this is bs?

start with this... banned in China www.falundafa.org...

or banned in Russia ...
www.alexanderpalace.org...

or instead you type up a banned site for me...

I think that the UK has terrible internet filtering lets pick on them ... i.e. so many site tell me that "content can only be view from within UK.

HOAX

Absolutely frightening.

The way the internet appears to be going, I can imagine in 20 years it will be more similar to multi-channel television with only approved (and sponsored corporate) web-sites available.

I can see more and more sites informing me I can't access from outside there country. Isn't it possible for a new service to emerge that you can log into as if you were actually in that country. Such like a IP mask or filter?

Considering the amount of criminals that goto aussie land, do we even care, lol.

I understand all the views against this, but they have to stop that child porn somehow, the police already have there stash so they do not need the net.

You better *raise hell* right now - the Internet has no borders.
What effects one part of the Internet - no matter where - effects the Internet in whole...

I am shocked and very dissapointed in my fellow Australians, this is a big thing happening, our freedom of choice is being taken away from us, we adults will be treated as kids by our parent government, telling US what we are and are not allowed to view on the internet, where are you guys ? this is a important thread, and i expected much more patricipation from you guys!!

We still have a choice, we can still stop this from happening...

We will foot the bill for this Firewall that will be placed around australia, internet speeds will slow by 22% or more, every 10,000 out of 1 000 000 websites will be blocked incorrectly...and we will just have to suck it up, like our communist neighbour china....is that what Australia will turn into ? a communist nation ??

What will you do if Abovetopsecret is one of those websites that are blocked incorrectly ?

We need to stop this and do something about it now...

There are petitions online that you can look up and sign, please guys, it's now or never!!!

Do you guys use Google? Download any Google apps?

Then you support Google and their policies. One of their key policies is that they use filters at the request of the People's Republic of China to censor content that the Chinese government does not want it's citizens to see.

Google says it's policies only apply to U.S. boundaries. That was in the October edition of Wired magazine in an article titled "Google's Dark Side". It also told how Google responded to being ranked last on Privacy International's consumer privacy protection list. Google said - "U R BIASED".

If this goes into effect in Australia, I guarantee you that Google will aid the Australian government when they ask to implement the same filters.

There are many ways around this censorship firewall, well not that many, but it is possible for a rather knowledgable person to bypass these measures.

But thats not the point here, the government will be forcing this on all of us, and we the consumers will have to foot the bill of this firewall, we will end up paying MORE for our internet use, even though this firewall will actually slow down our current internet speed by as much as 22% and the filter is not perfect, as many as 10,000 out of 1 000 000 websites will be blocked incorrectly, that is a very large number of mistakes.

So we pay more for less...

I for one will be cancelling my internet subsciption, and make use of internet cafes, there is no way I am paying $400 a month for censored internet, I think it is dispicable that our government act like we are little kids who don't know any better...

I firmly believe that if 50% of all Australian internet users decide to end their inet subscriptions, even just for a few months, the ISP providers will force the government to re-think this idiotic plan of theirs as they will be losing way to much money ?

But will that happen ? will the people stand together and DO something about this ?

No, as usual the sheeple will stick their thumbs up their own arses while nagging about it for a while to their wifes and friends...

Soon enough everyone will be used to it, and this is when the government will step in and increase the censorship even further, untill we are just like china...

Ugh I am so frikkin angry right now!!!!
