We did this long ago with Jaxa rockets...

en.wikipedia.org...

Even tested nukes on Indigenous people.

How about all nations under a one world government/army/currency and religion unite and build a moon city and fill it with earths convicts... kinda like NSW Australia and watch it turn into a beautiful NEW Sydney.

Go India ... shrugs about 320 run cricket loss.

I know many of the americans know about india through fox channel so I don't take their comments seriously. If an educated person and he or she knows the history of india, then I would listen. If someone knows the history of india, then they wouldn't talk stupid things about india. If america is so rich , then how come so many millions of poor people begging for money and they live under the bridges and the side of the roads. We know india has poor people and they need help but other things are very important too. In america , many of the scientists and engineers are indians. I've noticed that many of the americans , they don't want to see other countries succeed . Once India was the richest country in the world and then the un invited guest( british) came and distroyed everything. Now after 50 years of independent india succeed in all different areas. India has way to go.India is not a show off like america and we have the brain to do anything so stupid americans like your leader should keep your comments yourself. Ofcourse we like to hear from educated americans. I am little upset at the stupid people

Is India going to build a lunar base; just like the Americans, Chinese, Russians, Japanese and potentially Europeans?

Not likely as yet.. No budget has been approved towards manned spaceflight in India yet, let alone lunar manned missions and a permanent presence there.

Well, you're right where the budget is concerned. However, as I've mentioned in one of my posts above, Mr Madhavan Nair, the ISRO boss, in an interview on Times Now has said that they have already worked out the schedule: 2012 - Manned space mission. 2015 - Manned Moon mission. 2020 - Establishing a Lunar Base. 2020 - unmanned mission to Mars with rover.

The budget approvals are being sought.

Cheers!

What utter crap! Do I smell a Chinese chauvanist here?? You're right when you contend that India is nothing compared to China. Yes! In killing thousands of babies with baby milk food tainted with deadly melamine and making children's toys with poisonous lead that's affected the health of thousands of our American kids.

And you're a democracy? Forcibly throwing out thousands poor farmers from their lands without adequate compensation for building those swanky stadiums and glass towers! And you guys talk of socialism?

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

I find it profoundly amusing that on this website, of all the places, no one has had the fundamental cognisance to consider the fact that this missile launch occurred only a matter of weeks after the co-signing of the nuclear treaty with the United States.

Jesus Christ! What's the Indo-American nuclear pact got to do with the launch of Chandrayaan???

And by the way, it wasn't a missile that was launched to the Moon. It was a rocket - the PSLV C11. You don't seem to know the difference between a missile and a rocket!
I guess ignorance is bliss!

India spends its time, talking, talking talking, while china simply does. Even America plays catch up.

Oh yeah? Unfortunately you as a communist can't and will never understand what democracy is all about and that's sad! Does the common man have any say in China? Remember Tianamen square? That's how China operates. It sucks!

I have do not have high expectations of India, so anything no matter how small is welcomed. China is about to spend several trillion dollars on expanding its middle class - a global phenomenon in any terms, a transaction which will transform China from super power to potential hegemon. This is Indias bench mark.

That's the biggest bull crap I've heard! ROFL!

Oh yes lovely, India has its own space program. Tell me, why then do they require 825 Million pound in British tax payers money? This is a country that also has its own nukes, we don't. God, I loath this government.

is this allowed?

how can you have a space programme when you are also asking for International Aid?

For Chrissake! INDIA is NOT asking for aid for flood relief! These are NGOs who have nothing to do with the Government of India! In fact the government doles out dough to most NGOs to help them conduct various activities either voluntarily or on behalf of the government!

So this is a Christian aid organization asking for donations. Not the Indian Government!

Hey! Let what will be, be!

I don't know why some of you are so worked up about the Chandrayaan launch by trying to focus on the poverty inherent in a large section of the populace.

There are always groups of people breaking new grounds, and direct and indirect spinoffs have a beneficial impact on the rest. This has happened throughout history since industrialisation.

Try to extrapolate into the future, guys. Humankind would be nowhere if we were pegged down by such arguments.

ISRO has done wonders, and is trying to do some more. And at a budget which has to be compared to be believed!!

As a British Indian, I agree entirely.

Britain needs to stop sending aid to other countries when we have our own problems to fix. Thats 14 pounds per person. That said, the government wastes far more money on some pretty ridiculous stuff.

My other view is that India should no longer accept aid, since it tarnishes any success that it cultivates individually. India is capable of being a second world, developing country now. It needs to shed the third world image of an aid-accepting scrounger. Any NGO charity work would be gladly recieved, but the political tied aid that comes from central governments is not good for India's reputation.

Its a bit like this rocket business. Even though India was under an exceptional set of sanctions post Smiling Buddha (70s) and Pokhran, and even though there is no way in hell that India was gifted this rocket technology by any other country, there are still some who think that the Indo-American nuclear deal led to America giving this rocket to India. Pretty uneducated, but some people do honestly think that (probably the same people who think that the Iraq war is related to terrorism).

Then again, India sent aid to America during Katrina. Should we question why a country that has so many in poverty sent emergency aid to the richest and most developed country in the world?

Its all politics.

Only to be interrupted by the growling tummy. 0.18USD can buy us bread and soup for a meal that'll nourish us happily."""

Somehow I doubt you are feeling any pangs of hunger or are livingoff bread and soup when you own a computer, have access to the net,, and are on here. Dont think you can speak from experience do you??

I will bow outof your thread now.... having felt I debated my point....

And leave you all with the figure ------- 900 million in poverty.

What a great figure to be proud off.

India has done much more than send a payload to the Moon. She has made a statement very profound and lost on many people.

While She was a member of the nuclear club since the 70's, now She has grown beyond a regional power. The ability to send anything to the moon automatically brings intercontinental payloads in a proper perspective. She has a growing military with aircraft carriers which are power projectors.

This space mission has placed her above a regional power into the lower part of the super power class much like China. The ability to attack anything on the planet with nuclear or conventional payloads, but not the ability to intervene with troops across great distances.

Pakistan will have to respond somehow, but India clearly has the technology and financial ability to step into full super power status within a very few years. How this ultimately affects the national relations with China and Pakistan remains to be seen, but it has now been noticed.

In my "conspiratorial" point of view, there still are a few hurdles to be overcome:

1. The transfer of Chandrayaan from the last (and highly elliptical) earth orbit to a lunar orbit (just like a swinging circus trapeze acrobat hanging onto the hands of another on the swing turns around and latches onto the third acrobat on a second swing). This is the first time ISRO is trying such a trick in space where every celestial body moves relative to another with at least four degrees of freedom. (no conspiracy here!)
2. Then, once in Lunar orbit, Chandrayaan might die an "UNEXPECTED" death.
3. Or, once in Lunar orbit, Chandrayaan's systems might "UNEXPECTEDLY" fail.
4. If Chandrayaan crosses all the above hurdles, will the public get access to the original images of the mapped moon? If it is primarily ISRO's call, probably there are more chances of that happening as compared to what an organisation like NASA would do. Remember that India is more a functional democracy in reality than the US actually is.

Update: 23 Oct 08

The first orbit-raising manoeuvre of Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was performed at 09:00 hrs Indian Standard Time (IST) this morning (October 23, 2008) when the spacecraft’s 440 Newton Liquid Engine was fired for about 18 minutes by commanding the spacecraft from Spacecraft Control Centre (SCC) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Peenya, Bangalore.

With this engine firing, Chandrayaan-1’s apogee has been raised to 37,900 km, while its perigee has been raised a little, to 305 km. In this orbit, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft takes about 11 hours to go round the Earth once.

Cheers!
