i dont get it. people are always saying that media mess up childrens minds. yeah right! i watch violent cartoons all the time, but i don't think of stabbing people or stuff like that. im 10. these are the number one reasons that children do stuff like that.
number 1 reason: the child themselves
Number 2: the perents
number 3: the tv
there are probebly alot of reasons that are more importent then tv.
what im trying to say is its not tv it the children.

*NC changed title

Nice try, no banana.

There have been many studies that show that the media influence children.

In fact there have been so many that now if the topic comes up the media can't attack the results found to defend themselves. So EVERYONE really admits that it is the media that screws up kids.

So being 10, you know the facts of life?

I think it all comes down to what is acceptable and unacceptable in your enviroment, kids what to be and do what their peers consider is cool, what has been force fed to them as "cool"

Its a little of everything, mainly bad parents. Or socity revolves around fighting and killing. You do as you see, period.

I give you credit for being 10 and have a mind open. stay open, and you will go far.

the media definetly influences us all, and desensitizes everyone to violence...but I think it depends on the actual kid who watches it too...and I think parents play a role, as well as friends, society in general. But then there are also some kids who are just plain crazy.

Well as I've said before, we just need to give a test at age 6 to all children, which will decide if they get to live and become part of society, or are made into processed meat for pet food.

LOL!!!! Now I know where Meow-Mix and Tender Vittles come from!!!!!

If a kid is stupid enough to try to re-create a Johnny Knoxville stunt, then I will just chalk it up to Darwin's Natural Selection.

But most of the time, the parents are the ones in question. A little discipline never hurt.........and turn off the damn MTV.

Does MTV actually have anything to do with Music anymore?

I thought it was just a never ending group of miniseries.

Well, I watch violent tv all the time. Hell, I get japanese anime, original japanese versions, and guess what? They are easily 10 times more violent then anything America will ever show. The animes are showed to kids, hell, it like watching Bugs Bunny on saturday to them. Yet Japan doesn't have a #load of crazy ass kids running around killing people. But their media i more violent than ours. What is the difference? Well, maybe the parents are more incline to pay attention to their kids. Maybe the kids know better than be stupid. Or maybe the kids are just better. Why do we look for excuses anyways? Before a kid screws up, kid's fault, parents fault. Past 20 years, kid scres up, everybody else is at fault. Bull#.

The "M" in "MTV" now stands for MARKETING.

They have no interest in anything for art's sake. They are only interested in the almighty profit. Trust me. I know this from personal experience with MTV.

*Charlton Heston Voice*: Soylent Green is made of people!.

and on topic, I have no idea what it's like to live in a world where kids (and adults) aren't screwed up. let's face it, media certainly has an influence as do parents and environment, but when it comes right down to it, kids are nasty little creatures and always have been. what were kids doing when I was 10? swearing, smacking each other around, teasing each other, talking back, and all manner of lousy behavior. we were just smart enough to (generally) not do it in front of adults. obviously, today's kids have not learned two essential rules of childhood:
1. never be on your worst behavior around adults. they can find your parents, who can make your life hell. save that for the playground when the lunchmoms aren't looking
2. don't do anything that you're not sure you can get away with
obviously, bringing a gun to school breaks rule #2 (and possibly #1 if you bring it into class).

all right. school's out, kids. and who keeps throwing spitballs at me?!

I think we (or just me) are missing Mirello's point here. I think he is saying that the kids who DO commit violence, blame it on the media instead of accepting the responsilibity themselves.

The kids who do that are just trying to deny their own responsability for their actions, however they are also partly right, what you see in the media DOES on a general scale influence how you act.

Maybe it won't turn your average kid into a homocidal maniac, but slowly the acceptance of violence as an answer to lifes problems, becomes part of society's norms. And those who are at the dangerous end begin to act out what might have just been violent fantasies.

BTW you can't use Japan as a justification for violence as they have a pressure cooker society that although shows violence and porn etc is so controlled, so regimented people would never dare to display what they are feeling.

There are 8 rules for being japanese, and one that I remembered was "Be careful what you do people are always watching".

Then what about me? I watch it and am not Japanese. I don't don't go and kill people with a sword or gun. Yet I been watching Japanese anime since I was 12. Also, I been watching movies with Arnold and Jean Claude Van Dam and other violent movies since I was a kid, and have known how to fire a gun for almost as long as I could walk. But I don't kill people. I play Doom series, Quake series, Half Life series, GTA series, all them and not a psycho. So what is the excuse for the other kids and teens? I have seen the same if not more violent media and am not a sociopathic killer.

Also, what Japanese you watching? Kenshin, Hakusho, Inyuyasha, Jin Roh, FIX, Chocobits, Pet Shop of Horrors, no porn in them. None in Vampire Hunter D, Ghost in a Shell, Blood The Last Vampire, Neo Tokyo, none in them. But they are very violent, head cut off, head blown off, heart carved out with a knife, so still violent.

Although I agree that the media alone will not cause a kid to go and stab somebody it is a huge factor. Also once you get into junior high and high school then you want to stab somebody, its just one of those age things.
