I can't speak for Great Britain, but here in the States, I see people who are on welfare, or at best are manual laborers who have cable or satilite tv, as well as a computer, cell phone, and internet connection. I don't know how they manage to pull it off, while putting food on the table, paying rent, and taking care of their kids, but they do.
Now there a lot of "working poor" who are acutally working two and three jobs, and some of those are probably jobs where people are getting paid under the table (i.e. doing lawn care, cleaning houses, etc.)

What does it mean to be poor in your country?

That's a tough question.

You can be make a good salary but be poor if you live in San Francisco but the same salary in a rural community might make you pretty well off.

The costs of food housing and other things that are specific to your area certainly affect your perception of affluence or lack thereof.

I usually don't trust statistics because I've seen how you can work over the numbers until you get the outcome that you need for your initial premise.

There are lies, dammed lies and then there are statistics !
