Here we go again, these pirates are getting more bold. You would think they would lay low after the last few weeks but that does not seem to be the case. Business as usual.

This is the 73rd ship to have been attacked in African waters this year!

In the original days of pirates (Blackbeard & co) many warships were disguised as merchant ships to lure the pirates and then destroy them. They should do the same here.

As you said, " business as usual ".

I believe this is an actual 'occupation' now, may even have a university somewhere training these cut-throats.

I like your idea, lay some traps for them and eradicate the whole lot of them, in the very least have them re-think their current profession.

the problem is youd have to lurk around in international waters and wait for the pirates to come over

other wise it would be classed as a naval assault on somalia should U.S. and U.K. naval personel start shooting somali's in somali waters

The Royal Navy is already actively involved in plans to tackle this problem:

The Royal Navy could be given powers to seize Somalian pirates plaguing the Gulf of Aden and hand them over to the wartorn country's authorities

www.telegraph.co.uk...

In fact there is a large contingent of NATO warships in the area:

Responding to a United Nations request, warships from a NATO task force are heading to waters off the coast of Somalia to help fight piracy and escort ships carrying UN humanitarian aid. Two destroyers, including one from the United States, four frigates and one auxiliary ship from six NATO states will take part in the operations.

these pirates must be extremely heavily armed. I am trying to put the whole scenario in my head but i guess i should consider that they are teaching pirates how to be so successful??

In fact here is a link to a UN Security council request to all nations to help this this issue:

Security Council Asks Nations With Military Capacity in Area to ´´Actively Fight Piracy´´ on High Seas Off Somalia

Link to UN Doc

The act calls on all ships and planes to use any force necessary.

They would be very well armed. Somalian rebels shot down a Black Hawk (as you may remember) and chased UN troops out. Weapons are relatively easy for them to obtain, and the merchants are basically helpless.
These guys have been at wars for years - this is taking candy from babes for them.

We still have the USS Constitution up and ready to kick some piracy butts.

What are these ships doing to defend themselves?

Couldn't they just carry a bunch of RPGs or something and blow the pirates out of the water when they try to approach?
