The most persistent falsehood about Senator Barack Obama’s background first hit in 2004 just two weeks after the Democratic convention speech that helped set him on the path to his presidential candidacy: “Obama is a Muslim who has concealed his religion.”

Yes, this is the New York Times, which is known to have liberal leanings, at least editorially. Still, it aims at fair and accurate reporting.

Of course, most of you who are reading this article are all too familiar with those rumors about Obama that don't seem to die, even the ones which have been consistently proven false. Andy Martin, the subject of this article, appears to be a most unreliable source, if he is, in fact, a principal contributor to the whispers in the campaign against Obama.

The Democrats are not completely innocent of these kinds of tactics, although I have heard many fewer rumors about McCain that are as pernicious and aimed at fear-mongering in this election cycle. Neither Obama nor his campaign stoop to the level of Martin and his fellow conspirators.
