Cambodia, Thailand Prepare for Fight Over Temple

TAIPEI - What started as a decision by Cambodia, with Thailand's blessing, to register the 11th-century Preah Vihear temple as a UNESCO World Heritage Site has grown into a potential military conflict.

"This is a grave situation for Thailand's interests with potential for outbreak of hostilities," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, director of the Institute of Security and International Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok.

As if the recent violence related to the demonstrations in Bangkok, Thailand wasn't enough, there is now a potential war brewing with Cambodia over a temple whose ownership is under dispute. Apparently these events could be related, with this situation possibly being used by the government opposition group in Bangkok as a catalyst to bring down the current government, which is essentially a proxy government for the deposed Thaksin Shinawatra. It will be interesting to see how these two situations play out, and how deeply they are intertwined.
