The way animals are treated is nothing short of disgusting. I saw a documentary on the social behaviour of mountain gorillas last week and at one point the narrator introduced a place as the "place with the highest population density of mountain gorillas in the world." There were 500 mountain gorillas in this place. Such a fact made me sick to my stomach, these great beasts, who are so similar to us, although far less destructive number only in the thousands, whereas humans, the leeches of the world number in the billions.

If humans were not on the earth, then the world would be a place of harmony, ecosystems work perfectly and control themselves, until humans get involved.

I see people here condemning others for valuing the lives of animals above other humans, whilst I dont agree animals are more important, It is easy to see why some people take this view. The condemning side are the sort of people that make it difficult to be happy as human. The sheer arrogance of such people makes my blood boil. In their view, they are more important than animals, their view of course is based on their own narrow minded views and opinions, there is no reason whatsoever to think humans are more important than animals, if anything we are less important. Animals would be a downsight better off without us around, whereas we, with current attitudes would struggle very much without animals.

The small number of animals saved by humans are usually saved from a problem caused by man in the first place. All life is equal, there is no justification for stating otherwise. Yes I would stand with man in a man vs animal war, because all animal species favour their own kind when it comes down to survival, but we all know that would never happen. At the moment the only wars are humans vs humans or humans vs the world.

People kill billions of animals every year, because of greed and the worst reason of all - inconvenience. So many people kill animals purely for a minor inconvenience they have caused them, its ridiculous. Anyway I am ranting as per usual. I very much believe animals deserve as much respect as humans, but they do not deserve more. What gives anyone or anything the right to believe they are better than anyone or anything else?

I cannot disagree with you on that one. People who hurt animals for the joy of it are in my opinion very disturbed individuals. By the way, cats often kill for the fun of hunting. Still, I do not bring up animals killing animals as a justification for humans to do it. It is messed up no matter who does it, but mostly to us humans who have a "conscience" or a central nervous system capable of coming in conflict with itself. And we are very good at "resolving" those conflicts by compartmentalizing animal exploitation away from other human activity.

In other words, just because most of us buy our animal parts "pre-killed" does not make us much better morally.

I can't judge, because I eat meat and enjoy the products of animal exploitation. I quite enjoy been at the top of the food chain.

It would be best if I was unaware of all the negative consequences of my choices, then I'd be a normal guy driving a hybrid SUV so that I can waste energy while feeling good about it. The result of being aware of all of this is that one is miserable.

Then again, most psychotherapist agree that pessimists are often simply better informed optimists.

Who cares about animals, we have humans that are dieing and being abused.

And what the hell do you think you are? There is suddenly one animal I don't care about, and it's you!

I have not watched this video, but I saw a National Geographic special dealing with how elephants are "trained" by a northern Thailand tribe, and was literally sick for days. Young elephants were removed from their mothers and put through a long ordeal called "the crush." Many did not survive, as the treatment was outright torture to the extreme (locked in bamboo cages (where they couldn't even "flinch"), punctured with sharp objects, etc, etc.). The idea was to make these creatures "fear" man. I would have gladly left the human race and traveled to any other planet if possible after viewing this.

Should aliens be conducting experiments of torture on us humans, we damn sure well deserve it for the things we tolerate regarding treatment of our fellow sentient beings. In fact, I suspect there is a bit of karma involved in this.

On top of this, we have this "wack job" Palin who the country is going orgasmic over and she promotes the helicopter slaughter of wild wolves and bears in Alaska so that she and her "Viking wanna bes" will have more Moose to trophy hunt. Why isn't anyone protesting her practices? God I hate what we have become.

Why can't we worry about both? It is not a war and sides do not to be chosen.

children certainly need to be protected by all means.

but we have put animals in a position where they not only depend on us, they can no longer function for themselves.

And man can not have gotten where we are today without the help of animals. Dogs, horses, sheep, cattle.

So we have made them dependent on us, yet abuse them for it.

There is no honor and maiming and torturing something innocent and defenseless. Especially since they have helped our existence, they deserve our protection.

If you observe animals closesly, expecially chimps or monkeys, you can see that there is more to them then hair and eyes.

Ridiculous. Do you think if a bear wandered into a village with 15 children who had no protection, that somehow it would be humane? No, it would eat as many as it could, and would not be concerned for their pain or suffering at all.

As stewards of the planet, we've come a long way in protecting wildlife and nature. We need to go further, but that doesn't mean humanity needs to be wiped off the planet. Get a grip.
