China nixes U.S. meetings over Taiwan arms deal

www.cnn.com

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- China has canceled or postponed several military exchanges with the U.S. in reaction to last week's announcement that the U.S. is selling weapons to Taiwan, a Defense Department spokesman said Monday.

Officials announced last week an intention to sell $6.4 billion in arms to Taiwan, though the deal still needs to be approved by Congress.

Taiwan split from the Chinese mainland in 1949 and the United Staes has vowed to support them if China initiates an unprovoked

The deal would include Apaches, Patriots (Im not sure if its the PAC-3 variant), and harpoons. These are all weapons systems the Taiwanese would need to defend thier nation againts Chicom agression. I have to admit that I am a bit dissapointed that Burke class DDG's were not part of the deal as thier Aegis system would go a long way to shoring up thier defences against all of the SRBM the communists have pointed at them. In addition it would give them some measure of controll over the Taiwanese straight.

China no doubt will hold the Iranian nuclear deal back in retaliation.

You know, every time you guys start on with Taiwan, it introduces a nice little bit of economic instability in the entire region.

Thanks for that. Really appreciated these days.

The sales include advanced interceptor missiles, Apache helicopters and submarine-launched missiles.

Is the current U.S administration attempting to annoy every major country on the planet at least once before leaving government .. (if they leave).

With all else that is going in , they keep piling on the pressure .. feels like the bubbles gonna burst .. and it will be one hell of a bang.

Fred, it is indeed the PAC-3. That's not all though, the submarine launched variant of the Harpoon along with upgrades to it's E-2 fleet and the radars for the PAC-3 will still go along way toward improving Taiwanese defenses. I too am disappointed that Taiwan has yet to receive modern AIP subs, AEGIS capability and Block 50/52 Vipers.

The proposed sales would involve 330 Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC-3) missiles worth up to 3.1 billion dollars, and 30 AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopters worth 2.5 billion dollars.

Taiwan has also asked to buy 31 UGM-84L submarine launched Harpoon anti-ship missiles valued at up to 200 million dollars.

It also requested 182 Javelin guided missiles with 20 Javelin command launch units worth 47 million dollars.

Other proposed sales call for upgrading four E-2 Hawkeye aircraft and supplies of spare parts for fighter aircraft, transport planes, radar and communications equipment.

pretty much what i was going to say.

the outgoing administration appear to be causing as much destabilisation as possible without being to obvious about it whilst they still can.

we have the insessant drums of war for iran
we have the unorthorised pakistan attacks.
we have the big time riling up of russia with events such as the recent georgia malarchy
and now we have arms sales to tiawan, renegading on a 40 year old agreement that nixon signed with china, never to interfere with tiawan.

they want a world war,the ones in the shadows.

This is an alarming development. Not only from the military perspective, but from the financial as well.

The timing on this must have meaning beyond the diplomatic nonsense the leaders play.
