I think perhaps the greater the awareness a being has, the less free will it has, as it understands what is "wrong and right" better it is limited in its own actions.

I like this a lot.

First, because it indicates the impossibility of God: no being can be both omnipotent and purely good (self-limitation is still limitation).

And second, because it implies that, as organisms become less automatic, their volition is increasingly restricted, leading them to become... more automatic.

Thus you can have free will as long as you don't have it.

I wouldn't call it a 'strong possibility', but it is possible.

The enchanting Douglas Adams, a friend and inspiration to many scientists, may have been the first to come up with the idea - or something very like it - in his 1978 radio-comedy masterpiece, The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
