The point is not whether people are being stressed out. The point is privacy.
And I'm not sure if ATS encourages proxy servers, or if they don't care, or whatever. I haven't seen them advise it as an additional security
measure.

Grabbing a publicly broadcasted IP is one thing. Being able to access what should be my private area (signature) to display it (write access) is quite
another.
And if you think I'm going to trust them just because they say "Oh no, we don't log, etc., " is just plain naive.

I don't think anything of your issues.
The OP asked a question, I answered it.
Please direct you indignation to Danasoft, though I doubt they will care any more than I do.

Good. Then maybe you can dispense with the unnecessary, snide remarks and stay on topic.

Anyway, thanks to all here who have helped me muddle through this. My son the genius has explained it to my satisfaction. I still have great
reservations about danasoft, however.
Thanks again!

It sort of is... because I looked at the widget and the example on the danasoft site that you copy and paste to use also contains another link..
a href="http:// www. danasoft. com" img "http:// www. danasoft.com/vipersig.jpg" border="0">
Sign by Dealighted - a href="http:// www. dealighted.com"{Coupon Codes and Deals}
So they have included a redirect to a coupon site in the free widget, which means you can change that to link ANYWHERE

Well there is also THIS on danasoft...
"We also have a new city graphic that tells the person where they live, which is especially freaky."

Just block it then mate - that's what I do.
If it was intrusive, it would show up on zone alarm - I assume you have a firewall and decent anti virus as well as things like spybot and adaware.
It doesn't show up on any of them = non intrusive
It's still a pain in the arse though.....

Laugh.
We get threads like these every few years on this board. Its a trick that makes you think everyone else sees your IP when you yourself are the only
one who sees it.
It shows your IP to you.
When I load the page it shows my own IP.

Nope, buddy, not at all near London - at least a 4 hour drive away...

Uh huh you just go right on believing that
I mean its not like its difficult to track your IP... How else do you think ATS can ban a members IP address from accessing the site?

You would be surprised at how much info actually is known about you by your action of just opening a browser and visiting a site.
More surprised at how much can be collected by following that info and making a profile just by using cookies. Or how much info is collected from your
MSN-Gmail_yahoo mail in and out boxes from spiders perusing your messages.
Try sending yourself an e-mail about buying a car----mention a few models and makes---and then look at the ads that show up on the ad spaces of your
online provider.
When you choose to connect to the internet, you forfeit a certain amount of privacy.

A couple years ago I saw this sig in the discussion forums section of "The Atlantic Paranormal Society" website. As soon as people started alerting
the mods, everyone with that sig was forced to remove it immediately. Not necessarily because it was a security issue.. More because everyone just
freaked out and were bugging all the mods about it. After the sigs were removed everything returned to normal.. No freaked out users, no annoyed
mods, etc.. An easy solution to an annoying problem.

What do you care? You defend a government who currently spies on everyone. What's another person stealing your information?

looking at a widget like that and assuming that everyone else sees your information smacks a little bit of paranoia.
how would we even know who you were? short of tracing the IP, gaining access to your system, and rifling through your private documents, I mean.
