Hamas had made veiled threats it would retaliate against the United States for Israel's assassination of it's spiritual leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin on Monday, now today Hamas's new leader Rantisi said that Hamas had no intentions of attacking U.S. targets and that it's goal was to assassinate Israel's Prime Minister Sharon.

US threat claim is cynical diversion
"Hamas does not threaten America and does not threaten any country in the world. We have one enemy. It is the Zionist enemy that occupies our lands and kills our people," said Hamas leader in Gaza Abd Al-Aziz al-Rantisi in an exclusive interview with Aljazeera.net

Although many say that the war in Iraq accomplished nothing, it has shown the seriousness of the current U.S. government to act on terrorism. Terrorist organizations do not like the U.S. but they fear them. The new Hamas leadership clearly would not like to deal with U.S. retaliation. At the very least, the U.S. would encourage Israel to crack down harder on Hamas.

seriously, I don't think Hamas ever had intentions of sending hamas agents to the usa to commit homicide bombings. They probably said it before to get support from other terror orgs...but their issue has always been and will continue to be with Israel and the jews.

They're just trying to create confusion.

I'm sure they will attack any American interests, inside or outside of Pakistan, as soon as they'll get a chance to.

actually I think that Hamas is now trying to spin it so that it is America that is creating this fake "terror threat" against itself and blaming Hamas to justify their inaction in the situation or to support future Israeli military actions.

It seems that maybe Israel's policy is working.

To be honest, I think Sharon is more of a "legitimate target" than teenagers going to a disco. [A friend of mine had her 90 year old relative blown up during passover dinner.]

If Hamas spends effort to do targeted killing of political figures, like Israel does, as opposed to their speciality of indiscriminate murder of innocents, that's an improvement.

It is a war, after all, and those two types will fight it to the death.

Better that everybody else gets on with their lives until the warmongers are exhausted.

And yes, the threat of the USA actually does seem to have scared Hamas.

The USA is less discriminating in their aerial attacks. Israelis use helicopters with 5-10 lb warhead rockets against targets that they have been tracking for weeks and months. The USA uses 2000 lb bombs, and its human intelligence is worse.

Israel did that once, and killed many innocents---it was a disaster.

now that the mourning period for Yassin is over, we should begin to see how serious Hamas really is and this situation will probably escalate much further.

Armed Hamas Members Threaten Huge Attacks in Israel at End of Mourning Period for Assassinated Leader
Armed Hamas militants vowed huge attacks against Israel at a rally Wednesday marking the end of three days of mourning for the Islamic militant group's assassinated founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin. "Wait for the earthquake," one masked man warned.
Tens of thousands streamed to Gaza City's Yarmouk soccer stadium in another show of strength for Hamas. On Monday, about 200,000 people filled the streets of Gaza City for Yassin's funeral procession.

The huge rally Wednesday reflected Palestinian anger and support for Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks over the past 42 months.
