During routine observations of the cosmos, Italian astronomers got a glimpse of the UFO and tracked it.

Forgive me for not embedding the video itself, I cant get that to work for me.

In any case, I thought this looked pretty cool. The alleged UFO treks across the moon from west to east then changes its direction going to the northwest.

I saw a video like this a few years ago - it's one of the things that got me really interested in UFO's for a while.
Its definite proof that we haven't a clue whats out there.

To Embedd a youtube video copy and paste the code after the = in the Youtube url

Interesting, no detail on the ufo wich is odd> I always think the moons surface looks like dead skin, like a big dead skin ball.

Yes but that is old, it doesnt mean that it cannot be discussed more here, if it has died.

Also it is too hard to get into a thread that big, maybe people that took part can comment on here, and impart the best points made.

I did search on it before I posted it which resulted in this thread you linked for me but the links were dead. So I thought perhaps we could revive it. Thanks though....

Thanks monkeybus! I'll have to give that a try a next time.

ATS Protip: You can get the "good stuff" from a long thread by scanning for starred posts.

The best point made earlier was Internos' correspondence with the fellow who made the video.

The amateur astronomer did his own investigation with other experts and they determined the UFO was probably a balloon captured as the moon moved behind it.

Don't be fooled by the OP video that makes it seem like an object is moving across the face of a stationary moon. The reality is that the telescope was tracking along with the moving moon and the moon moved behind the fairly stationary object.

I did think that this is how they viewed/photod the moon, by slowley tracking it.

But wouldnt a balloon appear much larger?

Think how big the moon is at arms length most of the time, its like a 2pence peice. It takes a fair amount of zoom to get such a clear and large film of it. so the balloon on earth, would be a huge shadow, and not small(i know it would be a big UF0 on moon). Or am i wrong?

I believe the astronomers estimated the object at 4 miles up.

Just look for Internos' posts in the thread I pointed to earlier. It's all there.

Thanks IattackPeople

The video was originally located here:
81.72.14.47...

Alberto Meyer, the guy who filmed the UFO (an amateur astronomer) shared it in a SPECIFIC discussion board, because he was interested in some explanation. What made the objects difficult to explain was its apparent u-turn. In the meantime, someone else found (using Google P2P Search) and shared the video, just the video: this created all the debate around this object.

This was his first reply, via email:

the object only "apparently" changes its path: we can see the change of path if we do not consider that the focus was on the Moon. But, since the Moon was/is NOT still, and the focus was on the Moon, the apparent result is similar to the one of an object which changes path. The object NEVER changed its path: just a few times changed its speed. We debated it some time ago: at the discussion partecipated even the French scientist who discovered one of the newest moons of Saturn: after the discussion and the scientific analysis of the technical data, we assested that it was most likely a balloon which diameter was between 11 and 15 inches, at an altitude of approx 4 miles.
You probably downloaded the excel file in which the data about the subtraction of the movement of the moon is missing.

But our emails didn't cease there: i asked him how came such a result, and basically, why a balloon at miles and not a bigger object at, for example, 40 miles:
the explanation was clear enough: with those settings, there was not chance to get it at that focus if it wasn't between 3.8 miles and 4,2 miles: that was its altitude for sure, while its size was calculated by consequence. The size and the altitude were assessed beyond every reasonable doubt. The problem was the apparent turn

Now, what we should focus is the whole documentation (provided by Alberto in the board where it was originally discussed): to watch the video without considering that data is useless and deceiving: those data contains the values to be applied to the motion and the appearance of the UFO. This type of videos has to be watched with the documentation in the hands.
Here's the full documentation, and the description translated from the original .PDF file released with the video:

They have no doubts it was a balloon, it was moving slowly with some accelerations perfectly consistent with the winds blowing that day at that altitude: the assessments made on this documentation were some top class one, but it's perfectly understandable why the video caught so many people's attention.

I hope this helps

thanks internos, good sleuthing and layout of info as usual
.

So at a diameter of 11-15 inches, does that mean it was probably a good old regular balloon or some other type heavier material? I've always been curious if balloons would make it out of the atmosphere once you let them go.
