3 US soldiers charged with murder in Iraq deaths

hosted.ap.org

The U.S. Army has charged three soldiers with murder for their role in the killing of Iraqis last year.

Authorities say the Iraqi men were blindfolded, shot in the head and dumped in a Baghdad canal around April 2007 in alleged retribution for casualties within the 172nd Infantry Brigade.

The Army said in a statement released Wednesday that Sgt. John Hatley, Sgt. 1st Class Joseph P. Mayo and Sgt. Michael P. Leahy Jr. - all formerly assigned to 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment - face charges premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit premeditated murder and obstruction of justice.

It seems as though the armed forces may be trying to look as though they are cleaning house - whether this is true or not, it is certainly welcome news that these soldoers have been charged.

It remains to be seen if there is any further fall out from this regarding the chain of command, or whether this will be quietly brushed under the carpet with a plea bargain deal.

One thing is for sure, this type of incident does nothing but bring the armed forces into disrepute.

Let's hope that this is a full and honest investigation, and that ALL those responsible are brought to justice.

The Guardian is also carrying the story, but I haven't been able to find any MSM reports as yet.
