Audit: ATF lost 76 weapons, hundreds of laptops

news.yahoo.com

The ATF lost 76 weapons and hundreds of laptops over five years, the Justice Department reported Wednesday, blaming carelessness and sloppy record-keeping.

Thirty-five of the missing handguns, rifles, Tasers and other weapons were stolen, as were 50 laptops, the internal audit found. Two of the stolen weapons were used in crimes.

The audit by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine found "inadequate" oversight of weapons and laptops resulted in "significant rates of losses" at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"It is especially troubling that that ATF's rate of loss for weapons was nearly double that of the FBI and DEA, and that ATF did not even know whether most of its lost, stolen, or missing laptop computers contained sensitive or classified information," he added.

Strange...ATF is a major player when it comes to the government's efforts to disarm the common citizen (as noted in the two ATS thread-links provided), but then they let themselves get ripped off? First they steal our property under the "color-of-law"...

Yes they steal the citizens weapons under color-of-law, but then they allow people to walk up to their cars and walk away with perectly functionl M-16s, or are we expected to believe that ATF agents only carry handguns.
These guys have been the cowboys of the Federal Law Enforcement effort from day one, usually made up of poorly trained ex-military gung-ho morons that have no real idea what Civil Law is about they continue to press forward in their raids with the training they received in Military Justice from the Military. Of course if you advise them on that the automatic denial monster comes out ... Law Enforcement needs to understand our Civil Laws a bit more fully and they need to take full responsibility for their own actions, be men and step up to the plate.

I suppose if they 'lose' the records, they lose the attention?

Makes sense to them.

Makes victims of the rest.
